Questions & Answers for samsung 4.3 cu. ft. Steam Washer

Question

Can I use homemade laundry soap

Hello - I have a Frigidaire front loader and that I'm replacing with the Samsung WF448AAP. I currently make my own laundry soap using a non-sudsing castille soap bar (shredded), powdered borax and laundry washing soda. It barely suds at all and I don't use much because I have a small machine. When I get my new washer (on Tuesday!), can I use this type of soap in it? If the only qualification for HE is lows suds, then this certainly fits the bill. Thank you!

If the detergent you are making is low suds, and has the cleansing properties you desire, I see no reason why you cannot use it. The issue with non-HE detergent is it’s high sudsing properties. If you were to use non-HE detergent in a lesser amount to reduce the sudsing, the cleansing properties would be minimum. This is why non-HE is not recommended.

The factory default setting for the Normal Cycle should be Warm/Cold, with Hot/Cold and Cold/Cold being selectable options. If your WF448 appears to be defaulting to Cold/Cold, I would suggest checking to make sure the My Cycle feature is not activated. If selected, My Cycle would override the factory default. If this feature is not activated and your washer's defaults do not match the chart, then your machine may require service to correct this. You could either submit an online service request through the link below, or call 800-SAMSUNG to speak with any agent who would be happy to assist you.

I'm sorry to hear you're having this issue. To get your whites really white, I would suggest using the hottest temperature water that is safe for the fabric you're washing. The default temperature for the White cycle is warm/cold, so you may want to select Heavy Duty, Deep Steam or even Sanitize for extra hot water. Before doing so, however, check the fabric care instructions for your garments.

Besides using hotter water, I would also suggest checking the type and amount of detergent you use. Using non-HE or even too much HE detergent, can cause clothes to look dingy. Samsung recommends using only HE detergent, and following detergent manufacturer's instructions regarding the amount. Finally, either chlorine or non-chlorine bleach may be helpful in getting your clothes really white, but should only be used if the garment care instructions permit.

Question

Does the internal water heater run on regular cycles?

It takes a long time for the hot water to reach the washing machine due to the location of the water heater. Since the washer uses so little water, the water never has a chance to get warm before it gets cut off. Does the Samsung WF448 use the internal water heater to make sure the water temperature of the load is actually warm or hot while it is washing?

The WF448AAP is currently listed on Samsung's website, and can be found by typing the model number into the search bar from any page, or by going to this URL: http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/...

I cannot tell you when this model will be discontinued, but I can assure you that Samsung does continue to make parts available long after models are no longer in production.

Question

Liquid detergent runs into the washer drum immediately, even when it should be delayed

Hi,

I have the WF 448 Platinum. When I add liquid detergent into the main compartment, it runs into the washer drum almost immediately. It looks like there a very tiny slit under the "gate" for powder and liquid detergents, so that even if the gate is down, the liquid slips underneath and starts running into the drum immediately. I'm using only a small amount of detergent, so this is not a problem of overfilling. I'm puzzled why there is no rubber or something to stop liquids from seeping under the plastic... This is not a problem for normal washes, but it is a major issue for:

(1) delayed wash cycles: the detergent will sit directly on clothing for hours, possibly staining or damaging clothes, and may start to dry out before the wash cycle starts.

(2) cycles w/ pre-wash: the detergent in the main compartment goes in at the same time as the prewash compartment, leaving no detergent for the actual wash cycle.

Please advise.

Thank you.

Question

How is the water heated in the warm cycle on the WF448?

I am wondering how the water is heated when using the warm cycle with the WF448 washer. Does the washer take turns adding cold then hot water onto the clothes from the water lines to get a warm temperature? Or does it have a valve that lets in some hot and cold at the same time? I have had several items bleed on the warm cycle and I have not had clothes bleed in over 10 years. These are loads of all lights (primarily whites) with maybe some stripes or accent color. Same type of load I have washed on warm a thousand times with other washers and have never had a problem. It seems like some items maybe getting hit directly with hot water and sitting before the cold water mixes.

Thank you for the question. The WF448, like other Samsung washers, cycles the hot and cold water valves in order to achieve the goal temperatures, as follows: Cold = 60°F-85°F; Warm = 85°F-105°F; Hot = 105°F-125°F; Extra Hot/Sanitize cycle uses the internal water heater to boost the temperature to over 150°F, based on NSF standards. If you think the wash temperature is too hot, I would suggest checking your cold water valve to make sure it's turned on all the way, and clean the cold water inlet screens to be sure the proper amount of cold is able to enter the machine.

The WF448 washer uses steam as part of the various wash cycles to help loosen dirt and remove stains. In addition, since steam, by nature, uses water and high heat, it's important to consider whether the dolls are color fast and will not be damaged by high heat.

Another steam option you may want to consider is the steam refresh cycle in the DV448 dryer, which uses only as much water as is needed to create the steam, so the dolls would not be soaked. It is important though that they be able to take the heat of the dryer, since without heat you can't have steam. The DV448 and other Samsung dryers also have a "rack dry" option, so the dolls would not need to be tumbled while they were refreshed.

I'm sorry to hear your dark clothes are coming out faded and marked. I would suggest cleaning out the detergent drawer and running a rinse cycle to ensure there is no residual bleach left in the drawer, lines or drum from a previous cycle. Also, I would make sure the temperature selection is appropriate for the clothes, such as washing dark colors in cold, rather than warm or hot.

I would suggest you try adding the SilverCare option on the cycle when you wash the towels. In addition, please be aware that using too much detergent or fabiric softener - even HE detergent - can produce suds which can trap bacteria and cause odors. Customers often find that reducing the amount of detergent and fabric softener can help to alleviate odors. It may also help to add an extra rinse to the towel cycle.

Hint: To determine whether you're using too much, or the wrong kind of, detergent, try running a rinse and spin cycle with the towels but no detergent added. If there are suds, you're using too much detergent.

SilverCare will help to eliminate odor causing bacteria in your clothes and your drum in any temperature water. Adding it to even one or two cycles each week will help to reduce odors in the drum, as well as in the clothes you're washing.

Thanks for the question, and I hope this helps to resolve the problem!

SilverCare is an option that can be added onto most cycles. When selected, silver ions are released into the wash cycle, helping to eliminate odor-causing bacteria from both the clothes and the washer at the same time, even in cold water. Using SilverCare at least once or twice a week as part of your regular laundry routine can help to prevent mold and mildew odors, as well.

I'm sorry to hear there is mold in the detergent compartment of your WF448AAP. This can be corrected and avoided in the future by washing the detergent compartment out regularly with warm water. If you need to use something stronger, like bleach, to rid the drawer of mold, be sure to rinse it thoroughly before replacing to avoid bleach being dispensed with detergent or softener into your laundry. Please refer to page 21 of your User Manual, which can be downloaded as a pdf file from this website, for more information on cleaning and maintaining your washer.
