Question

odor in washer

I purchased a new Samsung front loading washer about 2 weeks ago.
The rubber ring around the inside of the door has a very strong disgusting odor which even gets into the clothes just washed.
This is a major problem. How can it be fixed?

This is not a major problem and is very common in front loading washer machines. An easy way to keep that stinky mold smell out of the washer is to wipe dry the rubber ring around the washer opening after every use and crack the door so air drying can take place. Silver care technology or what is now refered to as active fresh will elminate this problem with no wiping and air drying.

We are having the EXACT same problem. Only we peeled the ring back a bit and noticed slimy mold and mildew the entire way around the inside of the rubber boot. A service man came out and said this is a common problem with the front load washers. We have tried the hot water/bleach wash cycle and it didn't work. The service man advised to fill a small spray botter with a 50/50 mix of bleach and water. Spray it around the entire boot once a month and wipe it down. Seems like any manufacturer of a front load washer would have found a better solution to this problem by now since it has been around a LONG TIME!!! Guess it is just a continuous problem they all have. Would love to watch the sales of the first company that can advertise they got this problem fixed! They would have the best selling washers hands down!!! Hopefully the government doesn't ban bleach or we are in trouble!

As stated in an earlier answer, the WF448 is one of the models equipped with SilverCare, which is a technology developed by Samsung to help keep the drum and the clothes fresh-smelling and mildew-free without the use of hot water and bleach.

It is not unusual for water to have bacteria, and this bacteria can lead to the growth of mold and mildew if it's left sitting for long periods. Leaving the door open to air out, wiping out the gasket and door jam and running Sanitize cycles with bleach periodically are solutions that all manufacturers recommend for basic care and maintenance. Samsung is the only manufacturer to offer the patented SilverCare technology. Running this as part of your regular wash cycle once or twice a week can be very effective in preventing mold and mildew from developing in the first place.

I solved this problem by not ever latching the door when the washing machine is not in use. No odor.... ever! I run the affresh washing machine cleaner thru the machine about once every 2 months, but other than that, I just leave open so it able to air out and dry out and not collect mold.

Leave the door open when not in use, still not a bad idea to take a mild soapy mix and clean around the rubber ring occasionally. I do, and don't have any smell or slime on mine.

Yes, you can use the deep steam and Ag tech. on the washer together because the deep steam cycle is one of the settings on the Ag technology function. on front of the washer it shows the different cycles under the deep steam setting and one of the cycles is the deep steam. you would just set the washer on the deep steam setting and press the silver care button and press (>/II) button which is the start button.

I have used powdered Oxyclean and it says use 2 cups. I used it in my old front loader that i had before the Sammy and It makes way too many suds. I use HE Cheer and my clothes always come out clean. Oxyclean is just an abundance of soap and I dont recommend using it.

Samsung recommends using only HE detergents in our front load washers. If Oxyclean has come out with an HE formulation, then I would recommend using the instructions provided for HE front load washers on their packaging.

answer 3
I use OxiClean regularly. The OxiClean directions say to add it to the main drum before loading clothes. I, however, put it in the "Pre-wash" dispenser. I use the "Main Wash" dispenser for my liquid laundry detergent. In any of the wash cycles on my WF448 model, the Pre-wash dispenser gets water pushed through it during the short initial (pre-) fill. The Main Wash dispenser gets water pushed through it as part of the final (main) fill. Obviously, this won't work if you do want to use a Pre-wash cycle.

By the way, I saw another answer here where, I think, a user was suggesting that you needed 2 cups of OxiClean. The directions on the product I'm using suggest filling the included scoop to line 2. That's far less than even 1 cup. If I remember, older versions that were less concentrated may have asked you to add 2 scoops (again, the scoop came in the OxiClean box), but this was still far less than 2 standard cups. I have no over suds issues.

I hope this helps.

Question

Can The WF448AAP (Washer) and DV448AGP (Gas Dryer) REALLY handle King Size Comforters?

I have seen the capacity statements and read/heard contradictory information. I know that the King Size Comforter will fit inside the machines, but is there REALLY Sufficient Capacity to Clean them and then to Dry them? When my comforter soaks up water, that is about 110 lbs (or 50 kg) of dead-weight to manipulate. Can the Motor/Drive Units, Transmissions & Drum Carriers REALLY stand up to that kind of punishment without disintegrating? I am ready to purchase new machines and these seem to have it all... Silver Care, Vibration Dampening, Steam & Large Capacity... all wrapped up in an attractive, high-efficiency package. I just need confirmation that the capacity/capability statements are serious and confirmable... not simply 'fluff'. I don't mind dropping some serious coinage as long as I am getting what I pay for.

The 4.5 cubic foot WF448 and 7.4 cubic foot DV448 are capable of washing and drying a king size comforter. In fact, the rule of thumb is that a 4.0 cubic foot washer can fit a king size comforter; while the 4.5 cubic foot WF448 can fit both the comforter and the accompanying sheet set. The attached chart may help you determine whether your comforter is within the dry-weight industry standards for the capacities listed.

Samsung's warranty, as summarized below (see page 30 of the User Manual for greater detail), should help to alleviate your concerns about durability, though you may also want to consider adding your retailer's extended warranty for additional coverage, if that would make you more comfortable.

Samsung's Limited Warranty Coverage:
One (1) year parts and labor
Two (2) years control panel parts
Three (3) years stainless tub parts
Five (5) years motor parts

It may also reassure you to know that Samsung is the most recent recipient of the JD Power & Associates Overall Customer Satisfaction Award for Washers (2009) and Dryers (2008-2009).

Thank you for considering Samsung!

Thank you all for the input on my question. Ok... I bought the 448 Washer & 448 Gas Dryer... and guess what?!? THEY WORK BEAUTIFULLY ON KING SIZED SHEETS AND COMFORTERS!!! I am so very pleased and my wife is off of my back about getting a pair of machines 'big enough' so that she does not have to haul these items to a laundromat! Not only is it expensive and a total hassle, but y'all have heard that there is a spreading Bed Bug epidemic in this country (USA), right?? Guess where they can be easily picked up & transported to your home?? Yep... that is correct... THE LAUNDROMAT!! So... just to be on the safe side, she has STEAMED all of the bedding with these machines! Better safe than sorry!! Very happy with this acquisition and again, thank you!

MY WASHER THE 448 HAS WASHED MY KING SIZE COMFORTER 5 TIMES AND EACH TIME IT WAS CLEAN (MY DOG LOVES TO COME IN FROM OUTSIDE WITH WET FEET AND JUMP ON BED) AND FRESH. I ONLY HAVE MY OLDER WHIRLPOOL DRYER BUT IT DRIES IT FINE. I AM VERY IMPRESSED WITH WASHER AND I FEEL THAT IT WILL HOLD UP.... AGAIN YOU CAN ALWAY GET A LEMON BUT REMEMBER MOST THAT WRITE NEGATIVES ARE PEOPLE THAT FEEL THEY GOT RIPPED OF AND WANT TO TELL ANYONE THAT MAY LISTEN. THIS MACHINE WASHES, SPINS FINE ITS QUIET AND DEFINITLY ENERGY SAVING. MY WATER BILLL IS USAULLY 230-260 THIS TIME OF YEAR FOR 3 MONTHS (WELCOME TO NIAGARA FALLS) I JUST PAID 173.00 I WILL ALSO SAY MY ELECTRIC HAS DECREASED AS THE DRYER IS NOT RUNNING AS LONG TO DRY THE CLOTHS. WHEN YOU REMOVE THE CLOTHS FROM WASHER THEY FEEL COLD NOT WET. THE SPIN CYCLE REMOVES A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF WATER PRIOR TO DRYING.

Question

Is it common for the water pump to make a vibrating noise?

I just purchased a new WF448AAP and it's fantastic. I've just realized that my clothes were never really clean. Great looking as well.

The machine is incredibly quiet but it has a fairly loud vibrating noise when the water pump turns on. Is this normal or should I call a service tech to check for a loose part?

answer 2
The doors on the DV448 dryer can be reversed, but like most front load washing machines, the doors on the WF448 cannot. The preferred set up to easily move laundry from the washer to the dryer would place the washer on the left and the dryer on the right, so the doors would open out in opposite directions. If your dryer is stacked on top of the washer, you would probably want to have the doors open in the same direction. Instructions for reversing the door on your dryer can be found on page 19 of the User Manual, which can be downloaded through this link: http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/...
If you choose to stack the units, you'll also need to order the SK-5A stacking kit accessory, which is available at http://www.samsungparts.com or by calling 800-627-4368.

Lots of variables here that could be causing this. You may be putting too many clothes in or not selecting the proper setting. Try the permanent press setting and see if that helps and make sure the clothes aren't packed in the dryer so tight that they don't have space to adequately tumble.

In addition to trying the permanent press setting and reducing the amount of clothes you place in the dryer at one time, you may also want to try to the "Wrinkle Prevent" feature on the dryer, which will continue to tumble the clothes intermittently for up to 90 minutes after the clothes are dry in order to help prevent wrinkles from setting in.

Question

Why in the area under the soap dispenser rusty after one month?

I purchased this washer and dryer after reading such great reviews. I do the love the color, and the ability to fit my comforters in the washer, but after a week or two the area under the soap dispenser is discolored like rust. And youcan see where it looks like soap has run down the front of the washer. Also I noticed the drawer under the washer has water in it? I bought this washer 12 months same-as-cash and have only made one payment and was wondering if there is something I'm doing wrong to cause this.

I'm sorry to hear you're having this issue. Please contact 800-SAMSUNG to speak with an agent who can help you determine whether the soap dispenser needs to be replaced, or if your issue could be the result of overfilling the dispenser. I would also suggest you speak with the agent about the water in the pedestal drawer. This is not normal, and could either be the result of leaks from faulty drain connections or your unit may require service.

Thank you for the question. The fit is going to be very tight, which could make it difficult, if not impossible, to make necessary adjustments to the leveling legs. Proper leveling is critical to reducing vibration, as well as ensuring the detergent will dispense correctly, and the washer will drain and spin the water out of the clothes effectively.

I would recommend you either consider one of Samsung's 4.0 cubic foot models which are about 1" shorter, install the washer without the pedestal, or select a location with slightly more clearance. In addition, if you're also installing a dryer in this space, you may want to review the space and location requirements in the dryer's User Manual to ensure you have proper ventilation available.

Thank you for considering Samsung,

My washer and dryer are sitting on pedestals making them 53" tall and tucked under cabinets that are 55" off the ground. That's a 2" clearance with absolutely no vibration/squeeze issues. It does, however, make accessing the cabinets a bit of a stretch.

There is no minimum recommended clearance above the washer and dryer in a well ventilated area.

I am not aware of any way to vent this dryer from the side. It is not designed for that.

This probably depends on a variety of factors, size of loads, water content, etc. and I would think is tough to estimate due to the variability.

answer 2
The SilverCare kit in the WF448 lasts for 1000 cycles. To put this in perspective, if you select the SilverCare option for two loads each week, the silver plates will last nearly ten years; four times per week, and it would last five years. Samsung recommends using SilverCare at least once or twice a week to help keep the wash drum odor and mildew-free.

You can determine whether the part is ready to be replaced by pressing the SilverCare and Signal buttons simultaneously. LU1 indicates less than 1000 cycles of SilverCare have been used; when the code reads LU0, more than 1000 cycles have been run, and it's time to replace the part. Samsung recommends scheduling a service appointment to replace the part. You can contact Samsung for service by submitting an online service request through the link below or calling 800-SAMSUNG to speak with an agent who can assist you.

For pricing and availability of the part itself, please visit www.samsungparts.com or call 800-627-4368, and reference part #DC97-13059A.

SilverCare and ActivFresh: same technology, new name. Both use the natural sanitizing ability of silver to help keep both the wash drum and your clothing fresh smelling without the use of hot water and bleach.

There is no difference between SilverCare™ and ActivFresh™, just the name. This innovative technology helps to keep both your washing machine and your laundry fresh smelling without the use of hot water and bleach. Because of this, it helps save money and is gentler on fabrics.

It is essentially the same thing but is called ActivFresh on models other than the 448. I believe this may be the moniker going forward and might replace the wording of Silver Care but I am not sure.

The amount of silver used in the WF448AAP washer will last for 1000 cycles of the SilverCare™ feature being selected. The total number of SilverCare™ cycles run by the washer is displayed when pushing the Signal button and the SilverCare™ button simultaneously while the power is on. You will see one of these two codes displayed:
LU1 : less than 1000 cycles
LU0 : 1000 cycles
You should replace the SilverCare™ kit when the display reads “LU0” as the electrodes are near the end of
their useful life; contact 800-SAMSUNG to speak with an agent who can help you arrange for the part to be replaced.
