Since this unit is a North American model, it will only have support for NTSC/ATSC/QAM broadcasting systems and only 100v-127v 60Hz power. Since the NA TVs will not accept a PAL signal (or higher voltages), you will not only need a converter for the broadcast, but also for the power if you would like to use the TV in a PAL country.

Question

Do I need a separate HD Tuner?

My picture quality is not nearly as good as my 720p Samsung Plasma using the same cable input. The directions say that I need to connect to a HD cable box with and HDMI cable. I don't have to do this with my plasma. Do I need this for this TV?

Yes, if you want the best possible picture. Most HD stations broadcast in 1080i. Check with your local cable/satellite provider. Further if you wish to see bluray movies, you will need a 1080p capable tv, which this is.

Standard Definition (480i) signals look fuzzy on an HDTV. While many channels are now offered digitally and at a higher quality than analog, they are still 480i signals. This TV always displays at a resolution of 1080p no matter what the resolutuion of the incoming signal. If the signal coming into the TV is not 1080p, the TV scales it to fit on the screen. The scaling causes the distortion you see.
That said, the reason why the regular cable signal looks more distorted on a 1080p unit then it does on a 720p unit is because the lower resolution cable signal has to be upconverted even more on the 1080p unit than it does on the 720p unit. Although you do not need an HD set top box, it would be recommended for the best possible picture quality.

As a matter of fact, the UN46C6400 does have sound leveling. If you head into the TV’s menu, then under the “Sound” sub-menu, you will see the option “Auto Volume”. Clicking on this option will allow your to toggle the feature on, off or night. For more info on this, please refer to page 20 of the manual.

All current generation Samsung TVs are digital cable (DTV) ready. All of our TVs include a coax ATSC/QAM tuner that handles digital and analogue broadcast signals (cable or antenna) as well. No external boxes or equipment needed to view your basic channels.

The UN (LED North American TV) units will only have support for NTSC/ATSC/QAM broadcasting systems and only 100v-127v 60Hz power. Since the NA TVs will not accept a PAL signal (or higher voltages), you will not only need a converter for the broadcast, but also for the power if you would like to use the TV in a PAL country.
