It's the camera's lack of autofocus. If you seek a UPC barcode shopping app, try Pic2shop (free on GooglePlay), which works well on my Prevail.

I think it's more the complete lack of any sort of focusing options. I'm actually rather disappointed in this as even the Motorola i1 has a better camera. Samsung, there are ways to make this work in software. It's pretty much unacceptable for an Android device NOT to have barcode scanning functionality. Even sharing CONTACTS is done using this.

I understand this is a mid/entry level device and I don't care about extra megapixels but this bit is seriously disappointing. It will drastically affect my review, which I am holding off on until I use the device a bit more.

Use the data cable (same one you charge with) and plug phone into USB port of PC. Phone will ask if USB connection is for charging or "mass storage".....meaning do you want to connect to the phone internal data. Windows itself will recognize the phone.

Question

Disable the Lock Key

I am trying to find out where the "LOCK" key is. I think it is a VERY SMALL key at the top right of the phone. Bad size and bad placement.

I get the "Press the LOCK key to unlock" whenever I dial out or a call comes in. I can't hit any keys for the selection process. If it is the key at the top right of the phone, when I press it the conversation is ended. Also I can't select any number when the phone is locked, like "Press 1 to go to xyz department".
Finally, if this is the key, how do I turn this function off. I have set up my pattern to unlock the phone, so I don't need this feature turned on.

Thanks in advance with helping me with this problem.

answer 2
I've had the Prevail a couple weeks. The lock key is the power button at the top right of the phone. When you make a call and put the phone up to your ear the screen locks. To be able to hang up the call, use the dial pad to enter numbers, or anything you must first press that power button, which they call the "Lock key", and then either slide the red button on the screen to hang up the call; or slide the "dial pad" button up to access that. There is no way to stop this feature so plan to just get used to it. And be sure to NOT check the option to hang up the phone when you push the power button otherwise it will not let you past the locked screen to do anything - it will hang up the call. I did go into the security and select "none" for the screen lock option and that does NOT remove this feature. Also, I have found that not every browser or program is closed out of when you hit the "home" key or back button. I have gone into the task manager and seen many programs and the browser running in the background, which takes the life out of the battery. There is no "exit" or "close" option in the "menu" for that. So, I put a shortcut to the task manager on my home screen and check that when I'm done with the phone and want to be sure everything is off. Many times things did in fact shut down but many times not. For the price I paid and the awesomely cheap unlimited Boost plan I am really very happy with this phone. The camera can take acceptable pics if you're in good light and hold still but it's no good for the bar code readers at all, although it grabbed quite a few QR codes off my computer screen with no trouble at all and really fast. It's not a top level, you have to pay better money for those, but this phone, with all of its features and capabilities makes the subpar camera and the hassle with the lock seem insignificant. Sorry for the long-winded review but it's good to know stuff when you're trying to make a decision.

Question

Has anyone else experienced lockups?

Twice, now, my device has hard locked on me. Once was after installing some apps so that may have been a fluke but the other was while using Google Navigation and I received a text message. The device locked completely and had to be reset.

These may be isolated but I thought I'd ping the community, such as it is, and see if anyone else has had this happen.

The Prevail is very temperamental. It does not like to be hot, so keep the phone as cool as possible.
Upgrade your card to a 16 g, over a 4 or 8. If there is a 32 g out there, get one. Prevail needs memory to function, so be aware of your apps. Turn them off if you are not using them. Also be aware of aftermarket apps, as they do cause most crashes that everyone is complaining about. Most of all, make sure that you use the charger that Samsung recommended or you may over tax the charging system and the Prevail will throw a tantrum before you know that the power /charging management system is the problem. Prevail is a good phone at it's level, but it is not a high powered phone.

I just posted a similar question, I just got my phone last week cuz some of my friends have it, and it works great for them, no problems at all. Now, I downloaded three apps (facebook, pandora, and the economist) and it just starting freezing. First the screen will dim slowly, then it wont turn back on after pressing the lock button at the top, and if it did bring the screen back it wont let me access it or will take the inputs wrong (like I had to disable the lock pattern, cuz it just would not take it). It is a pain, but then the magic is that after you re-start it, it works just great. SO I went to the store and they downloaded some apps to keep the phone ok, and one of those kills of the apps running in the back, however, the phone is still doing the same. :/ Thus I beginning to think my phone is defective.

I have also had an issue with my phone freezing up. I downloaded a game and it installed successfully. After I played the game and exited the game the whole phone froze. I could not get a response to it until I removed the battery with the power on. Once I turned the phone back on it worked fine for a few minutes and then froze again. I uninstalled the game thinking maybe the game had a bug. I downloaded a different app and after using the app the phone froze again. I missed calls. I couldn't text. I had to remove the battery again to get the phone to shut down and restart. I immediately removed that app also then the phone was fine.

I think I've had some app related issues also. Otherwise I think it may just be data timing issue of several things accessing the device at the same time. I guess time will tell if there is a problem. Could just be an Android bug. I'm sure there are plenty of those.

Yes you can, just not with the default txt app. There are 2 good ones that you can use a Signature with called Handcent SMS and Go SMS pro. Chomp is said to be good too but I haven't tried it.

I have returned to the default txt app as Handcent was not sending my pictures. Not sure if GO SMS did or not, I'm just sticking with the default for now.

However you may check with your service provider which is Boost Mobile and check with them if they can add signature message for your outgoing text messages. You may call up their Customer Care toll free number at 1-866-402-7366.

The tap method is frustrating because you often have to try several times to get the cursor where you want it.
If you happen to be editing a doc in ThinkFree Office, there is a wonderful way to easily move the cursor around that I wish they would adopt in all applications. Hold your finger on the cursor and you will see a special small window showing the cursor and nearby letters. Now simply move your finger around (up, down, left, or right) and the cursor in the small window will follow your finger. Once the cursor is where you want it, release your finger.

YES THERE IS . JUST TAP WHERE YOU WANT TO PUT THE CURSOR . DONT KEEP YOUR FINGER PRESSED , ALL IT NEEDS IS A TAP . THE TEXT IS SMALL SO IT MIGHT TAKE A FEW TRIES TO PUT IT WHERE YOU WANT IT . TO CHANGE THE APPEARANCE OF THE HOMESCREEN, SIMPLY GO TO A DESIRED PICTURE, AND SELECT "set as" FROM THE MENU . OR YOU CAN DOWNLOAD WALLPAPERS, AND KEEP YOUR FINGER PRESSED ON THE HOME-SCREEN AS YOU WOULD IN ORDER TO ADD A WIDGET, AND SELECT "WALLPAPER" .

As of November 17, Boost and Samsung are sending out Gingerbread 2.3.5 updates "over the air" (ota). I got mine on November 17th, after I turned on Wi-Fi, connected to a Wi-Fi signal, and turned on "background synch" and "auto synch" in the settings menu.

The updates are being sent out over a period of several weeks, and I am GUESSING that the update will only be sent if you are connected to Wi-Fi and have background synch and auto synch turned ON. The update involved the Prevail turning itself off and on several times and took over 10 minutes and used more than 10% of the battery charge. I would suggest keeping your Prevail at MORE than a 50% charge at all times until you have the update installed. If your battery was is too low during the update process, the update might end before completion.

Hello and thanks for reaching out!

Try following the steps below:

After hooking up your device to the computer, you will see the USB symbol in the "communicator line" (at the top of your display). Pull this down by touching and sliding it down. Select "USB connected", another window appears, select "Mount". You should now be able to view, move, access files on your phone and pc.

you do not need a driver to do this. when you connect the phone pull down the notification that says usb connected and tap it. you can then click on turn on usb mass storage and your phones sd card is then linked to your computer just like a flash drive, and you can swap files from there
