Question

Wi-Fi connection?

Why is it that when my Samsung S3 connects to any wireless internet connection, it keeps scanning every few seconds for a connection? It never locks in and keeps scanning constantly. I would imagine that it would be a battery life issue as well.

I have noticed on my GS3 that if the connection is weak, and/or the wireless network has password security - - it may continue to scan for a stronger signal or one that doesn't require a password. I have my home network secured and cloaked so that I had to give the GS3 the SSID as well as the password before it would lock-in. Now- - no problem.

Question

Battery Drain

The phone seems to have an issue of excessive battery drain. When not in use it seems to drain the battery fairly fast without anything running. I make sure to close out of all the programs that are running as well as clearing the memory.

I do keep the sync on, and have wifi on at all times and are the only things turned on. I do not use the vibrate option. When I first got it. The stand by was 3 days. now the stand by is barely a day. Any thoughts on this or is Samsung working on a fix in the firmware?

The only way to save battery life on this phone is to shut down the data while not in use. Having it all the time on keeps the phone syncing with all the features that you may have online and drains it quickly. Done it, tested and workd. Follow my advise and see the results.

I'll sugest going into >Settings >Battery There you can see what's eating your battery and adjust your usage habits accordingly. There is the possibility of a corrupted app that continues to run inadvertly and doesn't let your phone sleep.

Question

How can I turn off the camera shutter sound?

I have the Sprint Galaxy S III. I've been trying to figure out a way to turn off the camera shutter sound. No matter what I try, the sound is always on. I've tried putting the phone in the silent mode and I can still hear the camera shutter sound.

Someone I know has the Verizon Galaxy S III and he was able to download an app called "Mute" off the Google Play store. That app worked to disable his shutter sound, but will not shut off the shutter sound on my Sprint model.

Can anyway help and tell me how to shut the shutter sound off on this phone? It's very annoying when taking a picture.

Root your phone
Edit the feature.xml file in system/csc to say <CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu>true</CscFeature_Camer_shutterSoundMenu>

Then you get the menu option to turn it off.

This information is readily available on the internet.

While the local ordinances may be in question, there is (was) a bill before the house to force manufacturers to have a shutter sound. There is a lot of debate about the legality. However Samsung has hidden this option and forced the consumer to use a shutter sound.
There is a way to disable the sound if you are interested in "Rooting" your phone. However this may void your warranty.

I don't know when it became law, but I know there is a law that says manufacturers can't produce phones anymore that have a silent option for the camera, simply because of the weirdos out there.. I've had several apps from the Play Store that mute it, but I keep coming back to the stock camera..

Yep, you can't as of the moment, far as I am aware. What I do is simply block the speaker on the back, its small so its easy to cover, do that and the sound is almost not audible.

If this is still too little, go and find a free camera app on Google Play! There are plenty with no sound effect or removable sound.

It is my understanding that the sound cannot be turned off. It is very frustrating. Hopefully Samsung will change this. In the meantime, if you block the 2 speakers with your fingers, it significantly decreases the sound. Also, some people I know have downloaded a different camera app and use it.

I'm right there with you on the frustration about this.

They are buried but they are there. Go to my computer and select your device.

Start by choosing "card" not phone.

Open card
If the photos were downloaded they will be found under download.
If they were taken with the camera on the phone then look in "DCIM"
you'll find them at

My Computer\SPH-L710\Card\DCIM\Camera

Once you find your photos it's a simple copy and paste or drag and drop.
Hope this helps other frustrated people. Copying music was much easier. You don't need to dig for the hidden treasure.

You can either enable "Smart Stay" and make sure your front facing camera can see your face, then while your using your maps smart stay will recognize this and not turn off the screen. Otherwise you can simply disable the automatic screen off setting. Or make the time set for a longer period (ie ten minutes) and your more than likely to at least touch the screen within that time frame and keep it active. Hope this helps. - Zeke

Technically accessing the apps in general will mean that you have unlocked the screen. Although you can jump straight into the app from the lock screen by pressing the icon and swiping up. Then from there once you've finished with the app you can simply press the power button, and we're locked up again! Hope this helped - Zeke

Question

MicroSD card no longer recognized?

Not sure if Jelly Bean update will address this or not. It seems that there are lots of people experiencing the same issue. I've had a Sandisk 32GB card installed the last 6-8 weeks. It seems soon after installing my new photos captured with the phone went into a new "Camera" file, but not into the old "Camera" file. Yesterday, I noticed the second smaller file was not in the gallery anymore.

Then late last night I kept getting a message that the SD card was ready to "unmount". I did not try to unmount it, didn't want to remove it yet the prompt kept coming up at the top of the phones notifications right after I touched the "clear" button.

Today, it continued so I did a soft reboot. Later I removed the battery, the card, rebooted, etc. all several times. Now the card is not recognized.

Next I put the card into an SD adapter and plugged into my PC. I could not open the card files to see what was inside and the next message said the file type was unrecognized and that I should format the drive. I thought I should insert it back in the phone to see if it would recognize the drive yet and it did! I used the "Mount" command and it said the file type was unrecognized too. Then it grayed out and was not seen in the phone!!

Nothing happened to cause this, it just stopped being seen.

Eventually, after removing the card and reinserting the card many more times it is clearly not seeing the card.

Anyone have any idea as to why suddenly my MicroSD card is no longer useable?? Is there a fix or fix coming with Jelly Bean??

Thanks in advance!

If your SD card is no longer recognized by your computer or phone, then it is corrupt. Recovery may be attempted in the chkdisk command in windows, but only if you can get the card to mount.

Hi Dejay11,

Thank you for your inquiry. We understand that that your phone, SPH-L710 is not recognizing your MicroSD card anymore and we do apologize for the inconvenience this might have caused you.

You may try performing a soft reset on the phone as a basic troubleshooting step to fix it, by taking out the battery for at least 15-30 seconds, then put the battery back in again and turn it back on to refresh the software.

You may try using a different compatible SD-card on your phone and try to insert your SD-card on other phones to check if the SD-card is faulty or your phone is not working properly.

I am not sure if this is what you are referring to, but do you mean to ask that when you got an email or text a voice would come over the phone and alert you? If so, you might have enabled Drive Mode on the old device and by default it does not come turned on some new devices. It is hard to find this setting, it varies by phone. On my S III it is under settings>language>text to speech output. On an S II it is also under settings>voice>text to speech if I recall. I only recall this because my mom somehow was able to fiddle around with the phone one day and activated this on her phone and had no idea how she did it.

Question

Unusual WiFi Issue Streaming Media

Hello! First off, everything works perfectly over the 3G connection. When I switch to WiFi, everything works perfectly EXCEPT streaming media (audio/video) from Android apps (the YouTube app and Flixster app as well). When I try to play a video in the YouTube app, it says "Connection to server lost. Touch to retry". In the Flixster app, it says "Sorry, this video cannot be played". When trying the music player w/ a DLNA server, it says the file is not supported. EVERYTHING else works perfectly over WiFi, and I can play videos (including YouTube) without issues from the "desktop" YouTube web site in FireFox. As soon as I switch back to 3G, streaming kicks right in. Put it back to WiFi, and it's dead again. I have absolutely no issues like this with my Android tablet, just the SIII. Please help.

It looks like this actually was my wireless router. I have a 2nd router on my network, and when I attach to that one streaming works fine. It's very odd that streaming is the only thing that doesn't quite work right, but I've found a workaround for now.

Thank you for the response.

Hi!

Thanks for reaching out. Have you tried contacting the app developers or your internet service provider for more info? They are usually better suited to handle these type of inquiries.

I can suggest trying to factory reset your device. You will find this option under your privacy settings. Just make certain you backup any data you do not want to lose prior to resetting. If we can help further in any way, you can contact us on twitter @SamsungSupport for more speedy responses.

I have been told that you should give the battery 2-3 extra hours to charge after the charging light turns green. Is this true or can you unplug the phone as soon as you have a full charge?

Once that light turns green it should be completely charged. Just to make sure go to settings and under battery look at the percentage of charge that the battery is holding. Leaving the battery will not charge it past its maximum capacity.

Question

handsfree call while s3 is locked?

i have the s3 with jelly bean installed and i have the "wake up in lock screen" enabled but i have the "pattern" security lock feature enabled. i have a bluetooth headset that i've paired with the s3. if the phone is locked and i turn on my bluetooth headset and press the call button on my bluetooth headset it makes a sound but does not listen to what i say unless i unlock the phone. i don't want to use the "swipe" or "motion" security lock, which is what is required for the "wake up in lock screen" function to work.

Oddly enough, the S3 has a menu option called "call settings" accessible from the phone app. In that option there is a sub-option called "Accessory settings for call", which has another sub-option called "Outgoing call conditions" (under "BT headset settings for outgoing calls"). This sub-option allows the user to choose whether to allow outgoing calls (presumably with the bluetooth headset) "only when device unlocked" or "even when device locked". Apparently this setting does nothing because I have tried to initiate a call from my bluetooth headset with this setting both ways, to no avail.

Hi sferrell615,

Thank you for your inquiry. We understand that you would like to use the handsfree, wake up in lock screen feature on your phone with the pattern lock setup on your phone.

You can only use this feature with the swipe or motion security lock on the phone. The wake up in lock screen will not work Using the pattern lock on the phone, unless you unlock the phone. We apologize for any inconvenience this may presents.
