Question

Bluetooth Audio issues after ICS upgrade

Hello,

I recently had my Epic 4G Touch upgraded to Ice Cream Sandwich. Before the update, I was able to stream music and podcasts to my car stereo (2012 Mazda3 i touring - AVRCP) and control the playback through the car stereo controls. Music would automatically start, when I switch to BT Audio mode and it would automatically pause when calls came in as well. It was an excellent and truly hands free experience. Hands free of my phone that is.

I am still able to pair my phone, make calls and stream audio, but I can no longer control my audio streams through the car stereo controls. Playback also does not start automatically in BT Audio mode or pause itself, when I make or receive a phone call. If I am streaming audio and a call comes in, I need to grab my phone, wake up the screen, and pause the screen, while driving, then accept the call.

At least I can still make phone calls, but I'd like to know if there is a way I can fix this problem. Is there some sort of AVRCP feature that got lost in the update from Sprint? I'm not even sure if this is the right place to direct my questions, but any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

The antenna on this phone is great...maybe check to make sure you have the right sim card for that phone or that your carrier has your correct phone on your account, sometimes this will affect your connection to the network as well. Just a couple ideas...hope this helps.

I discovered this was an issue with the carrier (Sprint). I have an air rave and still stinks until I complained for over 3 months and finally a filed a complaint with FCC.. miraculously my service is spot on not the fastest compared to VZ or AT&T LTE's but enough to work

it is not the phone I can testify to that.

Because Samsung "radios" are weak. There are obvious problems with the Epic Touch at the latest update last week was supposed to fix them. Unfortunately it didn't and most are still experiencing the "LOS" (Loss of Signal) issues with their devices. Since Samsung is pretty terrible at responding to these types of things, don't expect a fix anytime soon. Just lots of finger pointing....like they are already doing on this Q&A...."call your provider", "it's a provider issue", etc...etc....baloney.

Comparing signal bar levels between two different cell phone manufactures is not valid, even sometimes between different models of the same brand. The algorithms that calculates the number if signal bars displayed varies between different phone models even different software version of the same phone. The best way to compare phone performance is to look directly at the signal level in dBm. This is normally a negative number so a -70 is much stronger than a -90. To check this in Samsung Android go to settings-> about phone -> Status -> scroll down to signal strength. This will provide a direct comparison of the phones radio frequency sensitivity. Keep in mind there is another factor of network performance that is also used to calculate how many signal bars are shown, signal to noise level. Both RF level and signal to noise level together calculate the number of bars on most phones.

Question

Why is the Touch screen becoming unresponsive when charging phone?

For some reason, everytime I charge my epic 4g touch I get weird behavior and the phone becomes unresponsive to touches. I have it charging on the regular wall outlet. It's getting annoying and I'm becoming frustrated. This doesn't happen when I'm charging it in my car or when I plug it into my computer. Only when I'm charging it through the wall outlet. I've heard there was a problem similar to this with the first samsung epic 4g when it came out last year, hopefully an update or something comes up to fix this annoying bug fast. Anyone else have issues with the touch screen becoming unresponsive when plugged into a wall outlet?

In most cases you long press (press and hold) the image loaded on your device and the option to save it should appear. If this option does not appear it might not be loaded although displayed inside of the app you are running, if that's the case, tap the image once and then perform the long press solution. Enjoy.

I got this link from Samsung tech support. The tech told me that it wouldn't work on Win7 x64 (she said Win7 32-bit is supported), but in fact, it works PERFECTLY on my 64-bit OS.

Don't feel bad if Kies doesn't work. I have to reinstall everything to get it to work on my computer for my phone, and it won't connect at all for my wife's phone/laptop. It's a junky piece of software. In Europe there are two other products which Samsung offers that appear to do the same thing. maybe better. I'm looking forward to a version of Kies that actually *WORKS*.

I have found when I connect the USB cable that you must:
1. Pull down the drop down menu on the phone.
2.Tap on USB connected and then tap the "Connect USB storage" button.

Your computer should then sync up with your phone.

Another way to manage your phone files on your computer is with Kies air. This will allow you to link your phone to a computer via WIFI. You can download Kies air for free on the Andoid Market and you just need to have both devices connected to the same WIFI network.

Turn the phone over. On the back at the top, you should see a thin opening. Using that as help, pull the back of the cover off. You should see a slot for the micro SD card. Press against the side of the card until you hear a click. Pull it out and replace.

Remove the back cover to your phone, Directly above your battery and to the right you will see a small silver plate with a printed inscription next to it which says micro sd. If you already have a card installed you will see the edge of it protruding out ward from the slot. Carefully useing your fingernail push in on the edge of the existing sd card to the left and then slowly release. Now remove the sd card. If you are installing a new sd card/larger storage capacity just reverse the steps previously mentioned here. Goodluck.

Thank you for your inquiry.

Regarding your concern, there is no need to install any software on the computer for you to connect the handset with your PC. All you need to have is a memory card inside the handset and a data cable then set the phone to mass storage.

To connect the phone to the computer, please follow the steps below:
Pull out and up the memory card slot cover
Insert the formatted microSD card into the memory card slot
Connect the USB data cable to both the handset and the USB port on the PC
If Select USB Mode appears on the display press the clear key to return to the standby screen OR if the MTP Connect to the PC... appears on the display, press OK then with Yes highlighted press OK to disconnect from the PC
From the standby screen, press OK for Menu
Select Settings & Tools
Select Tools
Select USB Mass Storage
From the PC, double click on the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop
Double click on the newly created drive letter (which may appear as an icon or text, depending on your View settings)
Double click on the folder to view the contents
Copy and paste or drag n drop the files to/from the destination on the PC
From the handset, press OK for Disconnect
With Yes highlighted, press OK then remove the USB data cable from both the handset and PC

If you need additional assistance, feel free to ask us on Twitter @GalaxySsupport or @samsungservice for speedy responses in the U.S.

Thanks and have a great day!

Hi MommaAinsworth,

Thank you for your inquiry. We understand that you would like to know how to re-enable the USB to accept charging on your phone, SPH-D710.

You may try performing a soft reset on the phone as a basic troubleshooting step to fix it, by taking out the battery for at least 15-30 seconds, then put the battery back in again and turn it back on to refresh the software.

USB Utilities

This option allows you to copy files between your PC and the memory card in your phone.

1. Press Home key > Applications and tap Settings > Wireless and network > USB utilities.
2. Tap Connect storage to PC > Connect USB storage.
3. From your PC, open the folder to view your files.
4. Copy files between your PC and the memory card.

If you're connecting with Samsung Kies, just follow the steps provided below:

1. Install Samsung Kies software on your PC.
Warning: Close any running applications before connecting your device to a PC.
2. Press Home key > Menu key and tap Settings > Applications > Development > USB Debugging.
Make sure this setting is not checked. If this option is checked, Samsung Kies will not
function properly.
3. Using an optional PC data cable, connect the multifunction jack on your device to a PC.
Note: PC connection is only available in idle mode. Press Home, if necessary.
4. Run Samsung Kies and follow the prompts to update your device firmware.
5. Refer to Samsung Kies Help for more information.

You may try a different USB cable if you have and check if it'll work.

You may also drop by at your service provider's corporate or local store to try using a different USB cable to check if it would work.

We appreciate your continued interest in Samsung products.

Question

Why won't my phone be recognized by my pc?

No matter what I try my phone will not be recognized by my pc - and it has before. I cleaned out the port. The cable is fine as the phone is charging on the pc. I tried other usb ports on the tower. I am also getting massive roaming alerts again: I have the everything plan with Sprint yet the last time this happened my store just gave me another phone. I do not want a 3rd replacement because I believe it will be a refurbished this time and I do not believe much in refurbished electronics. Kies Air is not connecting to pics or video either at this time. I was going to connect to the pc with the USB and now all of this!!! Any suggestions?

Question

Lower 4 Icons

I am loving my new Galaxy S II smart phone but is there a way to change the bottom 4 Icons?
I would like to move the message icon up into the main screen and have the camera Icon at the bottom at all times. Is there a way to alternate these. Also is there a way to change the back ground color of the email page from black to something lighter? Your help is greatly appreciated.

I'm assuming that you are talking about the 4 icons in the dock at the bottom of the screen. Go into Applications. Hit the Menu capacitive button, select View Type, select Customizable Grid. Hit the Menu capacitive button, select Edit. Drag and drop application icons as you please. You can have anywhere from 1-4 icons in the dock. You cannot remove the Home/Applications icon. When finished press Menu, then Save or just hit the back button. You can set the view type back to alphabetical grid or list if you like.

Yes. On the home screen, press the Applications icon, then while in the App-Drawer, long press on the lower buttons and drag them out of the home-row. You can replace all but the "Home" button.

Question

How can I successfully connect the phone's SD Card/Storage to my car's stereo?

I have the correct setup to do this and I was able to connect my previous HTC Evo and have it function as music storage for my car stereo, but I can't adtivate USB storage or MTP storage successfully with my Samsung.

Is there a simple setting to change, is there an app I need to download? I run winamp with auto-mount but it keeps scrolling, "Device Error" at me on the stereo's LCD display.

I'm going to try moving my music storage to the external SD Card and will try again on the way home from work to see if it will help.

1.Bring up Settings.
2.Click More… (under Wireless and network).
3.Then select USB utilities ~ Set USB cable connection mode.
4.Select Connect storage to PC then.
5.Connect USB cable from phone to device.
6.Select Turn on USB storage.

One thing that I notice. USB mass storage mode in Ice Cream Sandwich is better than Gingerbread. I have had no mass storage issues then connecting to a car stereo on ICS USB storage mode.
