Customer questions and answers for samsung 1100W 2.0 cu. ft. OTR Microwave

Question

Bubbles, defects, and scratches appearing on control panel/display

Small bubbles and defects seem to be appearing on the control panel and display screen on this unit after only a few weeks. It's almost as if there is a plastic cover that is coming loose. Is there plastic over the buttons and the display? What can be done about this?
We hesitated to buy this microwave because the one in the store looked like the controls/display were poorly made but the controls on the one we bought looked okay. Now after only a little use this display is looking worn and damaged. Is there some way to protect the controls/display or to repair this? Other wise it will have to go back.

I'm very sorry for any inconvenience this may have given you. The only solution we would have for physical problems that arise for normal wear and tear would be to have it serviced. Please contact us at 1-800-SAMSUNG, or if you want to come through a social media channel, we have a couple options for you:

If you have a Twitter account, go here or to this URL:
http://twitter.com/#!/samsungsupport
Having a transaction number or model number and serial number handy ahead of time will be helpful.

If you have Facebook, go here to this URL:

This may sound silly but the controls all came covered with a piece of plastic to prevent damage to the glass surface. Was that protective piece of plastic removed or is that what you are seeing the bubbles in?

Question

Please define how quiet the fans are in the integrated microwave and exhaust fan units: SMH8165ST, SMH9207ST and SMH9187ST?

I am really happy that you are utilizing quiet exhaust fans in these units but how quiet is quiet?
What is the sone level on low, medium and high when the microwave and fan are both on and
when the fan only is on ?

This is a very important feature and should be included in your spec sheet. This feature is a
competitive advantage for your product.

Thank you for your prompt reply.

answer 2
The fan is very reasonably quiet for it's 400cfm power, because of it's low pitch sound it seems much quieter than most underpowered fans in other units. An example would be my last microwave had a high pitch sound for the exhaust fan and at half the power of the SMH9207ST, but was much more noticed when turned on in comparison.

answer 3
Sound level is not a common measurement available for over-the-range microwaves. To put it into comparative terms, however, the 400 cubic foot per minute vent fans on Samsung models are approximately the same decibel level as less powerful fans on other models.

It is reasonably quiet, but noiser than I expected based on the claim the SMH9207ST was quiet. It would not change my mind on whether to buy or recommend the model. I do recommend it.

I'm not sure which models the other reviewers have, but the exhaust fan of my SMH9207ST/XAA oven is as loud as it can be. You have to yell a little to be heard. And it can't hold a piece of bond paper to the air intake, so that may give you an idea of how "powerful" it is. I have to open windows and doors everytime I cook, and close the kitchen door so my fire alarm won't go off. But it cooks very well and is very big and pretty.

I have the smh9207st. It have some great power behind the 400cfm. So yeah it's louder then I was expecting for new, but truthfully, I've never had a microwave that had this clearing power. So you take the bad with the good. ( I also have mine vented inside. That could be another reason for some noise. Might be pretty quiet if vented out)

This microwave has 3 venting options:
1) you can "recirculate" the air (intake from below, vent out the front/top upper vents on the microwave if you vent into the kitchen atmosphere). The fans (in my unit) did not come positioned to recirculate and I had to reposition them 90 degrees. There are 2 screws to remove, pull up the fans (before you install the unit) and rotate the fans then reinstall the screws. Total time is 1 minute..easy!
2) you can vent into a upper duct which will ultimately vent outside. However, you have to have all the right vent pipes in place for this. Adding it later would be painful unless you had access to the attic or hired a contractor. Samsung includes a damper for this option.
3) you can vent out the back of the microwave but again, this normally would vent into a duct system. You must reverse the fans (instruction show how).
This microwave moves a LOT of air - so whatever option you choose, be aware that the fans are not queit, especially on high. I assume ducting them behind or up (via a duct pipe) would be quieter than recirculating the air back into the kitchen.

The SMH9207 can be set up to vent outside from the rear or top of the unit, or filtered air can be recirculated into the room from vents located in the front that are concealed from view.

If you don't currently have a vent that goes outside...choose the reciculating option....I did this with mine. I think you just unscrew one or two screws pull the fan unit out, turn it over, and put it back in (resecuring screws). What I did then was to apply "metal tape" (used in HVAC applications) over the minor gaps. I then installed the unit on the wall...and presto...complete.

I'm sorry to hear the exhaust fan on your SMH9207 is not working properly. If you've installed the venting correctly and the exhaust is blowing air rather than drawing it in, I would suggest contacting 800-SAMSUNG to speak with an agent who can help determine whether your microwave will require service.

The exhaust vent has a damper that may be closed, pipe maybe blocked, or the damper that comes with the microwave is not properly installed.

answer 3
Check that dampener opens and that vent pipe is not blocked; but does exhaust outside. Also, newer tighter homes do not "leak" much air. If your house is energy efficient and "tight" you may have to open a window slightly to allow air to enter the house. The fan can only exhaust air up to the point the fan cannot overcome the pressure differential; at which point the fan spins but does not move exhaust stream out of the home.

Question

WHY DESPITE I TURN ON THE MAXIMUM POWER OF THE FAN, THE SUCTION IS VERY LOW?

I AM NOT HAPPY WITH THE EXTRACTION FUNCTION OF THE OVER THE RANGE MICROWAVE (MODEL SMH9207ST). DESPITE THAT YOU CLAIM THE POTENCY OF THE FAN IS 400 CFM, WHEN THERE IS FOOD COOKING ON THE STOVE, AND I TURN ON THE FAN AT THE HIGH LEVEL, THERE IS NOT MUCH MOVEMENT OF VAPOR THROUGH THE FILTER. WHAT IS WRONG?

The 400 cfm fan on the SMH9207 is powerful and should do a good job of filtering smoke and grease, along with the accompanying odors, from the cooktop assuming it's set up correctly and functioning properly. I would suggest you start by reviewing the installation instructions, which can be downloaded as a pdf file by clicking this link: http://ars.samsung.com/customer/usa...

If, after checking the vent ducts, filters and installation, your vent continues to under-perform, I would suggest calling 800-SAMSUNG to speak with an agent who will be happy to assist you.

I'm sorry to hear you're having this issue. There are a couple of guidelines to be aware of when popping popcorn in the SMH9207. As stated in the User Manual, the metal shelf should not be used for popcorn, the bag size should be between 3.0 - 3.5 ounces, and only one bag should be cooked at a time. If you're following these rules and the popcorn is burning, then this is probably the result of the sensors not detecting the humidity while the popcorn is cooking. This may be the result of a faulty sensor, or the type of popcorn you're using. I would suggest testing the sensor by using the "Sensor Reheat" setting to reheat a dinner plate of food, for example. If the sensor heats the food properly, then it is likely the brand of popcorn (the seal on the bag may not be emitting the moisture and vapors to enable the sensors to detect the "doneness" of the popcorn). If the plate of food is not heated properly, then your unit requires service. You could either submit an online service request through the link below, or call 800-SAMSUNG to speak with an agent who can help you further.

The clock on your microwave should stay illuminated over night, and if you turn the cooktop light on, that should stay on until it is turned off. If this is not what you are experiencing, please try cycling the power to your microwave by unplugging it or turning the circuit breaker off then on again. If this does not resolve your issue, your microwave may require service. To initiate service through Samsung, please submit an online service request through the link below, or call 800-SAMSUNG to speak with an agent who will be happy to assist you.

Is your microwave wired into an outlet that also is wired to a light switch? I say this because my husband just put our new microwave up and because we had an electric outlet with no electric to it we had to wire it to the light switch. So it works fine until you turn off the light, then no power. Hope this helps.

To take off the vent screen-unscrew the 3 screws, open the door, slide the vent to the left, and pull out. The filter goes in the middle on an angle. It just lays there at a 45 degree angle and doesn't snap in.

Try to open the oven door and push it down. If you feel that you can make enough force to tip the whole range, install the bracket. This range is too heavy, it's really hard to tip.

I'm sorry to hear your SMH9207 stopped working. Please make sure it's plugged into dedicated 20-amp outlet. Try cycling the power by turning the circuit breaker off then on again. If it still won't operate when you place an item inside and press a button and start, service may be necessary. Please note that the microwave may need to cool for a short time after using a Sensor Cook option. If the microwave has cooled and you still can't restart it, please call 800-SAMSUNG to speak with an agent who will be happy to assist you further.

Is the display functioning?
Check that Child Lock did not inadvertently get turned on by holding start button for 3 or more seconds. Reference the users manual page 16.

1) Reset microwave by unplugging from power source for 15 minuets.
2) Then set clock, also page 16.

Manual can be downloaded from Samsung.com

Lastly it is possible that a power surge has damaged your microwave oven.

1) Was an appliance rated surge protector used? Has it been tripped?
Surge protector is sacrificial device and must be replace if damaged by a power surge. The great features of your microwave oven are made possible by a computer like control board and it is susceptible to damage from a power surge.

If a power surge has damaged your microwave you should review your homeowners insurance policy with your agent for possible coverage.

Unplug the unit for 15 minuets and plug it back in. If it still does not work and a qualified electrician has confirmed the dedicated circuit outlet is working correctly (Volts and Amps) then the unit may have been damaged by a power surge.
Was the microwave protected by a surge protector? If so, when a surge hits the surge protector needs to be replaced if indicated to continue to protect the appliance.

Check with your homeowners insurance agent to see if you are covered.

These computerized electronic appliances can be damaged by power surges.

Question

Three Microwaves

Model SMH9207ST. I have had three in three years. First bought in 2009. Lasted until two weeks ago when it lost all power. No lights or life. Asked Samsung and was told too bad-out-of- warranty. Had to get exact replacement to match oven and mounts so bought a new one last week. It had a sizzle in the area of the lower right panel when the cooking power was on. It had to go back. Just installed a third one. It appears to be working....but...I have never had an appliance last only three years. Even a cheap toaster lasts ten years. I feel that I have been mislead on Samsung quality. Also, there was no concern as why a perfectly performing microwave should suddenly cease to function. Any other manufacturer would be interested in discovering a reason. And provide some consideration for a customer who has bought over $2,500 in Samsung products. So, unless I hear from you, my shiny three year old Samsung microwave will be consigned to the landfill for recycling. What a waste. What a shame. My money, your pride...both apparently gone.

If your microwave had a sudden total failure it might have been an electrical surge. Damage from a surge can be prevented with an appliance rated surge protector. If a surge does damage the surge protector you will need to replace it; but it did do its job and protect the appliance.

I use the to protect all my electronics, microwave and expensive front load washer.

You should contact your insurance agent to discuss your coverage under your homeowners policy.

Thank you for contacting Samsung. If the temperature becomes too hot around the microwave oven, the fan in the vent hood will automatically turn on at the low speed setting to cool the oven. The fan will automatically turn off when the oven has cooled down sufficiently. This is an automated process and cannot be turned off. The fan may stay on for 30 minutes or more after the cooktop and microwave controls are turned off. Thank you for being a Samsung customer!

Question

Bad magnetron replacement

I know that the limited warranty is up on this Microwave, but I think I read somewhere that the magnetron is actually covered for ten years. The microwave runs, but there is no buzzing and nothing heats, so I am pretty positive that the magnetron has gone bad. How do I get the part replaced under the Magnetron warranty?
