Thank you for contacting Samsung.

Based on our research the error code is in fact "SE" not "5E". That being said, we recommend unplugging the microwave for 10 seconds or longer, as this is a key short error. If you plug the microwave back in and the SE error code persists, we recommend that you file a service request.

Most Samsung microwaves that have the ability to recirculate air from the exhaust fan are set up at the factory to do so. However, it's important to check your unit before installing it to make sure it is set up appropriately for the type of venting you prefer. The fact is it's a lot easier to adjust it prior to installation than after it's been installed. The installation manual provides an explanation of how the blower should be angled for each type of venting.

Thank you for the question,

No. You will have to actually take the unit out and turn it 180' to allow it to recirculate. If you have installed duck work, it is set for that. You just have to install the hardware that is included.

The SMH9187W is designed to be mounted over the range, and has a strong vent fan built into the bottom of it to draw smoke and odors from the stovetop while cooking. The unit then needs to be vented, and can be set up to vent outside from the rear or top of the unit, or filtered air can be recirculated into the room from vents located in the front that are concealed from view. If you do not intend to actually use the vent fan, then you could have it installed to recirculate inside and just not turn the fan on. However, Samsung would not recommend using this model as a countertop unit, or in a way other than what it was designed for, if that is what you are suggesting.

Yes, it can be used without a vent. It would vent out the front/top through a charcoal filter.

registration of model number

when registering I was asked the model number along with a choice of xaa/xac and I couldn't find either code xaa or xac so I guessed at one. It's not on my model number tag located inside the microwave. Does this make a difference on my registration?

No, the charcoal filter is only for room recirculation use. Don't use it for outside top or rear exhaust. This is clearly spelled out in the Samsung installation and user manuals.

Some Samsung microwaves are shipped ready for installation as a recirculating vent. If your SMH9187 arrived without the exhaust adaptor installed (see image below), then it should already be set up for recirculating ventilation. If the exhaust adaptor is attached, this is a good indication that you'll need to make some adjustments in order to set it up for recirculating. Please follow the detailed instructions on page 20 of the Installation Guide to remove the exhaust adaptor (which is not necessary for recirculating installation) and to adjust the angle of the blower motor so it faces forward.

Follow this link to download a pdf of the installation instructions if you do not already have a copy: http://ars.samsung.com/customer/usa...
Please note that these instructions are the same for all Samsung over the range microwaves, and are not specific to any one model.

Question

How can I correct the Model Number on the product I just registered?

I could not find the "model" number on the product so guessed that it is XAC. My product is 1.65W, not 1.8. Therefore, I probably should have indicated the model number as XAA. Thank you.

Yes, as indicated in the diagram, the minimum cabinet depth is 12" and the maximum is 14". Since the depth of the SMH9187W is about 15-1/2", you can expect the microwave to protrude past the front of your cabinet by about 4" once installed.

Your SMH9187W has several different methods of programming, including what's called "Multi-stage cooking" for setting up to three different cooking stages, each with their own time length and power level. Please refer to page 29 of the User Manual, which can be downloaded as a pdf file from this website, for instructions on how to set the microwave for one-stage (manual) or multi-stage cooking.

Question

My over-the-range microwave oven, modelsmh9187w/xaa, is set-up for vertical venting to the outside. Do I still need to install the carbon filter?

Installation instructions are not clear as to whether the carbon filter is required to be installed if the microwave oven is vented to the outside (top vent). Instructions show how to install the carbon filter, and caution to replace it if the oven is inside vented...but doesn't clearly tell whether the carbon filter must be installed when the oven is vented to the outside. Currently I have not installed the carbon filter...is this a concern? Also, once the oven is installed (built-in to cabinet), you can't get to the two top screws holding in the front upper vent grill...unless you drop the oven down far enough in front to access the two screws...this can't be right!

Thank you for the questions. It is not necessary to install the charcoal filter for the external exhaust for the cooktop; however, the microwave itself exhausts through the front vent. Therefore, if something is being heated in the microwave that has an odor, then the air that is exhausted through the front vent might benefit from being filtered.

With regard to accessing the screws, most upper cabinets are only 12” deep, and the top of the microwave is about 15-3/4” deep, so the screws, which are at about 13-1/2” should be accessible. If your upper cabinets are deeper than the standard 12", then you may want to take this into account as you install the microwave.

Question

Potential problem with new unit

We just installed our new microwave and the lower corner of the touch control panel is not fully attached to the microwave cabinet. It looks like the control panel is stuck or glued onto the body of the microwave but the very bottom right corner is not attached tightly. We have pushed it to see if it would stick and it just pulls out after a while. We think this may become a bigger problem. Should we ask for sevice on this unit?

It made me pick a model code but it wasn't there

I just registered my microwave, a SMH9187W and it made me choose a model code, but I don't have either of those numbers in my microwave. It just says SMH9187W for the model number, no XAA or XAC. Was I supposed to look somewhere? I just picked one for my product registration.

Question

The installation instructions are not correct? Manual indicates default of Outside Top Exhaust but the unit is not set for that.

The install manual (which I relied on) indicates that the default factory configuration is Outside Top Exhaust (p11) yet the unit I received (and installed) appears to be configured to Recirculating as venting is to the front and nothing is being vented to the top. Now I have to remove the unit, reconfigure it and reinstall it. Does that seem correct?

I'm sorry to hear you need to reinstall the microwave to correct the venting. The note on page 11 in the instructions that you are referring to which also states "except for non-vented models" refers to models like the SMH9187 which can be set up as non-vented units. This means they can be set up to recirculate air into the room (or vent inside) rather than needing to vent outside.

I hope this helps to clarify this part of the instructions.

If by "shutting off" you are referring to the sound of the internal fan continuing to blow, this is not unusual. While the exhaust fan is controlled by the on/off button on the control panel, the internal microwave fan runs automatically, as needed, to cool the microwave components.

If you are referring to the cooking functions, and the control panel is not responding to your efforts to cancel these operations, please try resetting the unit by unplugging or cycling the circuit breaker off then on again. If the control panel still doesn't respond effectively, please call 800-SAMSUNG for further assistance.

The buttons on the SMH9187ST are programmed to populate the screen from the far right position, so starting with seconds, and cannot be changed to represent whole minutes instead. For example, to cook for one minute, you would need to press 1-0-0. Some people find it useful to use the "Add 30 Sec." button, pressing it twice for one minute.
