Thank you for the feedback. While it is necessary to press the Start/Enter button firmly, it should not be difficult to do so and the button should not be unresponsive. If your Start/Enter button does not respond to a small amount of pressure, which should be necessary to ensure the command is intentional and the controls are not oversensitive, then please feel free to call 800-SAMSUNG to speak with an agent who can assist you in determining whether service is necessary.

The light bulbs are in a very small enclosed space, which is why Samsung doesn't recommend bulbs greater than 40 watts. Higher wattage bulbs would generate more heat possibly causing a problem up to and including a fire.

Many owners of these microwaves complain the over the range light is too dim. I agree and I found an answer.
I found a 40 watt GE high intensity bulb Number 90401 which has the exact same unusual intermediate base to screw it into the bulb holder. I put two of these bulbs in my microwave and they are much brighter, especially on High setting. You can buy these bulbs at big box stores for about two and a half bucks each. They are a pear shape with clear glass rather than the tubular shape Samsung installs but they fit the microwave just fine.

The appropriate wattage for the SMH9187ST replacement cooktop bulb is 40 watts. Samsung would not recommend replacing it with a higher wattage than what it is designed for.

Question

Is air supposed to also blow over door when vented to the outside?

When installed per the Samsung instructions for outside venting (top vent to outside), is the SMH9187ST model supposed to also blow air over the door? My builder installed my microwave on a new home and when the exhaust fan is activated, air blows out over both the door and the through the outside vent.

Not supposed to blow air over the door. Probably, vent hole is not aligned to the blower or not big enough. I gues it's partly vented outside and partly returned thru vent over the door.

answer 3
Yes, it is normal to have air blow out of the inside vent, even when the SMH9187 is set up to vent outside. The reason for this is the microwave fan is separate from the turbo vent which draws the air up from the cooktop. The microwave fan vents inside, while the turbo (cooktop) fan can be set up to vent inside or out.

answer 2
If the SMH9187 venting is set up properly, the powerful 400 cfm exhaust fan should draw air from the cooktop effectively. Please review the instructions in the installation guide to ensure the blower is set up properly to vent inside. Installation instructions can be downloaded as a pdf file through this link: http://ars.samsung.com/customer/usa.... Please note that these instructions are the same for all Samsung over the range microwaves, and are not specific to any one model, though it is important to confirm the blower is angled appropriately for your desired venting.

If, after reviewing the installation, you continue to have an issue with your exhaust fan, please call 800-SAMSUNG to speak with an agent who will be happy to assist you further.

Try sliding the entire vent grille to the left and then pulling it out.

http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/SMH9187ST/XAA# -> How To Install The Charcoal Filter link has the right instructions (the user's manual neglects the "slide to the left" part).

Happened to me too. Check the instructions and you'll find that you have to slide the vent grille to the left (about an inch.) There are three or four tabs that then slide out of slots that help hold the grille in place. Reverse the process when you put the grille back on -- takes a little patience to line up the tabs / slots, but don't force it...take your time.

Question

How do I eliminate loud vent fan noise on SMH9187st?

We installed our SMH9187ST last night. The vent fan makes a loud noise on settings 1, 2, and 3. Settings 4 and 5 are not quiet, but not as loud as 1,2,3. We installed with a top vent to outside. The motor is quiet by itself, but in the micro it roars. Also, even though it's vented to outside, it still blows a little air through inside vent over door.

Love the look. Love the oven. Just want it to be as quiet as the display model in the store and wondering if we're doing something wrong.

FYI. There may be a problem with the installation. To install the Exhaust Adapter and Damper the instructions direct the installer to remove a screw above the vent fan (See page 12 of instructions. A1 step 1). After sliding the Exhaust Adapter into place you are instructed to replace that screw. If you do not return that screw then the vent fan will be very noisy. I made this mistake. After returning the screw (step 4), the fan noise was eliminated. Now, even on the highest setting this microwave vent fan is quieter than our previous microwave.

answer 2
I'm sorry to hear you're experiencing this issue. It's possible that the cause of the loud fan could be the vent itself. I would suggest reviewing the installation of the vent and the microwave, using the Samsung over the range microwave installation manual, which can be downloaded in pdf form from this link: http://ars.samsung.com/customer/usa...

If, after reviewing the installation and correcting any issues with the vent itself, you find that this problem persists, please contact 800-SAMSUNG to speak with an agent who can assist you further.

A little more information that isn't included in the manual:
Step 2a. Open microwave door, then slide the grille to the left until it stops.
Step 2b. Pull off grille with a slight top to bottom rocking motion.
Step 4a. Insert filter with aluminum mesh side up into bracket. Filter rests on two plastic tabs with the back edge tilted up.
Step 4b. With the microwave door open, align the three tabs on the bottom of the grille with the wide area of the matching slots on the front of the microwave. Push the grille onto the microwave and slide to the right until it is flush with the sides.

Yes it should be for nonducting as well. When opening box you should of gotten a small charcoal filter which is for the nonducting type. I just purchased the white version and its exactly the same except for the color. You need to rotate the blower motors 90degrees before installing, then after mounting remove the 2 screws on top of the grill and slide grill to the left allowing plastic hooks which are part of the grill to become free. Pull grill off and you will have access to the charcoal filter area. Good luck hope this helps.....

The SMH9187ST comes with everything you need to set it up for recirculating exhaust, including the charcoal filter. Though it will probably come ready to install that way, it's a good idea to confirm the blower is facing forward to recirculate air prior to installing. The installation guide includes instructions for venting through the top or the rear, and for recirculating.

"SE" is the "Key Short Error" error code, which simply means that the key pad is not communicating with the main board. First, try unplugging the unit for 10 seconds, then plug it back in (or switch off the circuit breaker for 10 seconds, then switch back on). This should reset the unit. If the error code returns, the microwave may require service. Please click here to fill out our convenient on-line service request form: http://www.samsung.com/us/support/o...

The SMH9187ST can be set up to vent outside from the rear or top of the unit, or filtered air can be recirculated into the room from vents located in the front that are concealed from view. The exterior dimensions of the SMH9187ST are 29-7/8" (w) x 16-1/2" (h) x 15-15/32" (d). Other measurements are available on the specifications sheet which is available on the product page: http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/.... I've also attached a handy sheet which shows important dimensions to consider when choosing a location.
