Questions & Answers for samsung 1000W 1.6 cu. ft. OTR Microwave

Question

Replacement for the Control Panel

Hi, I purchased this Microwave 3 years ago. After 18 months the control panel started to randomly activate and the buttons would "press" themselves. I contacted Samsung and they agreed to pay for the cost of the part and I would put it in myself. I was told the problem would not happen with the new part. 18 months have now gone by again and I am having the same problem. Only this time the microwave activated itself at night. We had a loaf of bread in the microwave at the time and the plastic melted and nearly caught fire. It most likely would have if I hadn't smelled the smoke. Had I not been home I most likely would have lost my house. I am fortunate that I did not lose my family due to your defective product. A search of the model number SMH8165 reveals this is not an isolated incident and actually happens very often although Samsung seems recklessly indifferent to their customers safety and well being. Is there an upgraded panel that does not chronically suffer from this defect or do I have to purchase a new microwave to keep the one I currently have from destroying my home or killing my family?

Question

I am having a hard time trying to find out how to install this microwave SMH8165STE.

The mounting brackett is on the bottom of the microwave. The PDF which you refer to is from 2003 and that mounting brackett is very different. Can someone please explain how to install this microwave with up to date information.

Thank you for the question. While there have been some changes to the mounting materials over the years, the premise remains the same. Most of the microwaves now come with paper templates to guide you in where to drill the holes as opposed to the "plates" that extended up from the mounting bracket in the instructions. In addition, most models now come with the bracket attached to the back of the microwave, which helps to prevent them from being lost when the unit is unpacked. The bracket will need to be removed from the back of the unit prior to installation, and the paper template should be used to locate the proper placement of holes and cutouts. Another step that varies by model involves the direction of the blower motor, since not all models ship with the blower angled the same way. It's important to adjust the angle of the blower based on your desired venting. For example, if venting out the back, the blower should face toward the rear of the microwave; if venting out the front it should face toward the front; etc.

I hope this helps to clear up the confusion. Please feel free to submit additional questions if you'd like further clarification.

Thanks for the question. The internal fans in the microwave are designed to turn on automatically in order to prevent the internal components from overheating. It isn't unusual for it to turn on if, for example, you're using the cooktop beneath it which could cause the bottom of the microwave to heat up. If the humming is from the fan, this is normal. If the humming is caused by the microwave itself turning on, then service may be necessary. Question

The microwave is model SMH8165STE. The unit starts random beeping on its own?

The microwave started beeping in the middle of the night. (In service since April 2010) The unit was not in use. Tried to clear the beeping with the cancel button. Did not work. Unplugged the power for about 10 minutes. Upon power restoration the beeping was gone for about 30 minutes and then it started up again. Unit was not being used.

Thank you for the question. The SMH8165STE should come with the exhaust adaptor and damper, but I would suggest visiting your local appliance, home improvement or hardware store to purchase the other parts needed to vent the SMH8165STE outside.

If you don't already have it, you can follow the link below for a downloadable pdf of the installation instructions for Samsung over-the-range microwaves: http://ars.samsung.com/customer/usa...
Please note that these instructions are the same for all Samsung over the range microwaves, including your SMH8165, though it is important to confirm the blower is angled appropriately for your desired venting.

Question

I have what I assume to be an error message of either 5E or SE on the digital screen.

I've tried unplugging it and still have the same thing.
I came into the kitchen on morning and the light was going from bright to dim to off repeatedly and I pushed the Cancel button till that stopped then got the message on the screen. It now doesn't respond to any buttons being pushed. Any suggestions to fix it will be appreciated.

Question

Microwave SMH8165ST shows a error code of 5E is not working

I'm very sad to say that my fairly new Microwave SMH8165ST SS# j4g97mosa00177b stopped working and shows a 5E error code. I have a lot of Samsumg products and are very disappointed as the unit is less than 2yrs old. I don't plan on getting it repaired since I could almost purchase a new product when to cost of service is included.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by a "reset" for the microwave, and it would be helpful to know what type of issue you're having. The closest to a "reset" would probably be to cycle the power to your SMH8165ST by unplugging the microwave or turning the circuit breaker off then on again. If you had an error code, and the code returns after cycling the power, your microwave will require service. Question

Range light cycles on its own.

I have a OTR micro - SMH8165STE.
The range light cycles through it settings on its own (dim/bright/off). You don't have to be anywhere near it. It started intermittantly a while ago (6-8mo), but pretty consistent now. I've tried unplugging/replugging, but same symptom. It seems to cook fine, but will cycle through light settings and beep. I've had it for a little over a year... problem started before the year, but intermittantly... tried calling service, but when they were going to come out it was working. Any suggestions?
