Thanks for the question. The turntable motor is designed to rotate in either direction at random, so this is normal.

The turntable rotates both ways to ensure even heating since microwave energy is not spread evenly throughout the compartment. I hope this helps

You can follow the link below for a downloadable pdf of the installation instructions for Samsung over-the-range microwaves: http://ars.samsung.com/customer/usa...
Please note that, while these instructions apply to all Samsung over the range microwaves, including your SMH1713, it is important to confirm the blower is angled appropriately for your desired venting.

There are a few factors that can affect the ability of the 300 cfm vent fan in the SMH1713 to draw odors and steam from the cooktop. In particular, the distance from the cooktop to the vent fan, and the location of the pot under the vent. For example, a pot located immediately under the vent fan will be more effectively exhausted than a pot placed toward the front of the stove. The minimum recommended distance from the cooktop to the cabinet above it is 30", placing the exhaust fan about 13-1/2" above the cooktop. If yours is higher than this, the fan may not be able to draw the steam toward it as effectively.

I have never owned a microwave hood that would remove all the steam. Even just my regular hood would not catch it all. I have vented it both ways too. Through the roof & back into the room, either way it won't catch it all.

"SE" is the Key Short error code. Please try cycling the power by unplugging the microwave or turning the circuit breaker off then on again. If the error code returns, your microwave will require service. To initiate service through Samsung, please submit an online service request through the link below, or call 800-SAMSUNG to speak with an agent who will be happy to assist you.

First thing to try is to unplug it from the electrical outlet, plug back in to see if it will reset itself. if this fails call Samsung or use the online service request as you may have a bad control board. Do you have a surge suppressor on the outlet that is plugged into??? Most appliances today are very sensitive to even small or frequent small surges which will shorten the life of the equipment. they are inexpensive and will save you alot of hassles.

The SMH1713S can be set up to vent inside, with filtered air recirculated into the room from vents located in the front that are concealed from view. You can follow the link below for a downloadable pdf of the installation instructions: http://ars.samsung.com/customer/usa...
Please note that these instructions are the same for all Samsung over the range microwaves, including your SMH1713S, though it is important to confirm the blower is angled appropriately for your desired venting.

The cooktop exhaust fan on your SMH1713 can be turned on by pressing the Vent On/Off button on the control panel. The microwave fan will turn on automatically to help cool the internal components.

You can manually turn on the vent / fan by pressing the On/Off or 2 speed button on the microwave. Since this is an over the range microwave it can also turn on when the temps gets too hot below the microwave from cooking on the range.

Question

Re: carbon filter and air vent

I have just purchased this microwave and have two general questions:

Is it necessary for the carbon filter to be installed even if the microwave exhaust is vented outside the home?

I currently have my microwave connected to an external exhaust vent, however I still notice slight air flow thru the front grill on top the microwave. Is this normal? I know the exhaust air is vented out my home thru a duct because the damper fully opens when I turn on the exhaust. Thanks for your time.

Thanks for the question. The internal microwave fan vents through the front of the unit regardless of the direction you have the cooktop exhaust fan set up for. It's a good idea to still use the charcoal filter to help remove odors from the air venting from the microwave itself.

According to the installation guide, you only need the filter if you are non ducted/vented. You are probably feeling some air leakage or maybe some of the airflow from around the magnetron

Thank you for the question. Samsung does not have a built-in frame for the SMK9175. I would suggest contacting a kitchen designer or cabinet maker for advice on installing the over the range microwave with a built-in look.

Since this is an over the range Microwave it should have that look once it's installed. Typically it would be between the cabinets and above your stove to have the built-in look. Also the support to hang the microwave is on the back of the microwave. It's the small metal bar on the bottom. You have to use the guide to set this up properly. It's best to have it professionally installed (cost somewhere in the $99 to $100 range).

Thanks for the question. The SMH1713S does not actually have a rack, so a rack should not be used in it. If you have another model that did come with a rack, then it's fine to leave the rack in when cooking on only one tier. It's important, however, to make sure that the item on the turntable will not expand and push the rack off of its supports, such as when heating a bag of popcorn. For this reason, it's a good idea to remove the rack when not in use.

Based on the "bacon" portion of the Warm Potato Salad recipe on page 20 of the SMH1713 user manual, bacon can be cooked on High for about 2-3 minutes. The amount of time really depends on how many strips you're cooking, and whether you like it more or less crispy. The above recipe calls for 4 strips of crispy bacon, cooked for 2-1/2 to 3-1/2 minutes.

Thanks for the question,
