Hi!

Thanks for reaching out. First make certain you are using a Samsung Brand USB cable. If you have another USB cable or PC, we suggest trying that too. If this isn't working, you can try uninstalling and re-installing all kies software. Trying all USB ports on your PC is important as well. Make certain you disable any virus protection or firewall software as well.

If this isn't working, try factory resetting. Just make sure you backup any data you don't want to lose prior to resetting.

If you need additional assistance, feel free to reach out to us on Twitter @samsungsupport for speedy responses in the U.S.

Have a great day!

ZEREP1729 is correct, although you may need to get an updated SIM card to use WIFI Calling. Sometimes, you get a prompt saying that 911 requires an address, but your cell carrier has it. WIFI calling becomes active shortly. The other products are useful too since WIFI calling minutes count against your plan (if you have a finite number of minutes).
Good Luck!

I don't think that you can. There has to be some accountability associated with the phone such as and address for 911. And if I'm not mistaken even if you got and unlimited data plan it still counts your minute usage on wi-fi. You also have to make sure that you phone has the most current and up to date SIM card. The newer phones require the newer SIM cards

Skype would be the most reliable service to use.. However, most cell phone providers now have very cheap ALL IN ONE plans with unlimited calls, texts , and Data for one price. All providers that I know of in the US, also have plans where no contract is needed. I don't know what service your phone is locked in to (AT&T, T-Mobile, VERIZON, etc..)but you can possibly have the phone unlocked by notifying the company you purchased it from. Samsung also has UNLOCKED devices that mean you can use them with any service you choose and also internationally. Hope this helped.

Lookout, it's a great app. It's also free for the basic features. It will give you the ability to locate your phone (using gps), backup your contacts and also sound a siren (in case you dropped it and it fell under the couch)
In addition, it will scan your apps and prevent malicious apps from running on your phone.

Question

How do you make assigned ringtones work for individual contacts?

It's very easy to assign a ringtone or sound file to a contact. The problem is that the phone just plays the default ringtone no matter what the ringtone field says for a contact. I'm using google to sync for mail. calendar and contacts and I have also copied all contacts to the SIM card with no improvement.

If you have any ringtones whether purchased and downloaded or made from apps like Ringdroid. Create a folder called Ringtones. Now go to contacts, select the contact you want to change, you'll see the option for Default ringtone. Select and choose phone ringtones or you can navigate to the folder using Select sound from My files.

This is for T-Mobile on the T989 Galaxy SII. Under the "My Account" tab, hit the "menu" button (one on the left at bottom of phone). Then tap "My Device" goto the "Quick Tools" tab at the bottom and the third selection down "Data Roaming" will get you to where you want to be. Uncheck the "Use Packet Data"

Thank you for your inquiry.

Regarding your concern, there is no need to install any software on the computer for you to connect the handset with your PC. All you need to have is a memory card inside the handset and a data cable then set the phone to mass storage.

To connect the phone to the computer, please follow the steps below:
Pull out and up the memory card slot cover
Insert the formatted microSD card into the memory card slot
Connect the USB data cable to both the handset and the USB port on the PC
If Select USB Mode appears on the display press the clear key to return to the standby screen OR if the MTP Connect to the PC... appears on the display, press OK then with Yes highlighted press OK to disconnect from the PC
From the standby screen, press OK for Menu
Select Settings & Tools
Select Tools
Select USB Mass Storage
From the PC, double click on the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop
Double click on the newly created drive letter (which may appear as an icon or text, depending on your View settings)
Double click on the folder to view the contents
Copy and paste or drag n drop the files to/from the destination on the PC
From the handset, press OK for Disconnect
With Yes highlighted, press OK then remove the USB data cable from both the handset and PC

If you need additional assistance, feel free to ask us on Twitter @GalaxySsupport or @samsungservice for speedy responses in the U.S.

Because Google syncs, many system apps have to run. If you to go Settings/Accounts and Sync, you can disable syncing for many applications and sync on demand. This will stop some activity.

Some apps have granular settings that control how they run and if they run at startup.

Some applications remain active even after you close. This is improved in Jelly Bean 4.1 and 4.2.

Good luck.

I contacted the developers at Slacker Radio and they told me that their app starts automatically at phone startup and always is running and it also spawns services for its widget as well. There is no option to turn this off. Even if you stop all processes, it will just restart. There are many like it!

Since Slacker is installed in ROM by TMO, the only way to get rid of it would be to root your phone (voiding warranty) and using an app like Titanium Backup to remove it. Unfortunately, many apps have dependencies, and removing one could break others!

My bosses phone number is blocked.

Every time my boss calls me, I never hear the phone ring. When I look in the logs, I see "unknown" along with a blue circle with the letter A next to the call information. How can I change it?

You accidentally blocked him while answering a call. Go to Settings/Call/Call Rejection and unselect the number associated with him. Should be fine after that.

Attention Samsung: Why do you always answer all questions saying you need more information? You have plenty of information to answer this question. Either do not reply or provide support. This is really lame.

I had the same problem and it was because I was using a cheap knockoff USB cable. Use a USB cable that is specifically for the Samsung.

Thanks and have a great day!

Question

Is it normal to loose the data connection when I place a call?

This happens when I am driving to and from work. I know that I have a data connection all the way there but, as soon as I place a call, I (sometimes) lose the data connection.

For video formats and codecs it supports (MPEG-4, H.264, H.263, DivX HD/XviD, VC-1) and video formats (3GP (MPEG-4), WMV (ASF) as well as AVI (DivX)). Hello-

Thank you for the inquiry. In mass storage mode, the phone appears as a disk on the computer when connected via USB (just like a keychain USB flash drive). Files can be moved to and from the phone by simply dragging and dropping files on the computer. The Samsung Galaxy S II requires that this mode be enabled using the settings menu. Copy and paste this link into your browser for instructions. http://bit.ly/obb1kT

Question

Grainy & Blotchy display issues

I've notice my display has long grainy lines that are visible with darker blue & grey colors or when viewing video. Also there are darker random blotches/freckles that are noticeable when the screen is completely black or dark grey. Is this a display defect that can only be corrected with replacement or is there another known fix for this?
