Question

Why does my Samsung Galaxy S 4G phone Force Close when i receive an MMS?

I have one contact that sends me MMS messages. When i try to open them, i get the message "Sorry! The application Messaging (process com.android.mms) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again" Then i must push the Force Close button. Some of the remedies i have already tried include:
Battery pull
Deleting the contact and re-adding him.
Deleting the contact and having him send me a message.
Hard Reset
Had the contact send an MMS message to an HTC Sensation phone and a Samsung Galaxy S 2 phone (this belonged to a Samsung Tech Rep) and they were successfully received.
Pulled the battery, SIM card and SD card and inserted them into a Blackberry phone (non-android) and had the contact send me an MMS message. This was received successfully.
T-Mobile sent me a brand new phone. I put the battery and SIM card into the new phone, had my contact send me an MMS and i still received the Force Close message. Sent the new phone back to T-Mobile.
T-Mobile has officially closed the trouble ticket.
Upgraded the phone to Gingerbread. Still get the Force Close message.

VERY nice cookie cutter answer there. Unfortunately, it's NOT a problem with my provider. This is the result of a 6 month issue:

After working all the way up to Level 3 Tech Support with Samsung, it was proclaimed to be a compatability issue between my phone and my friend's phone, a Kyocera Lingo. The rep with Samsung had a Galaxy S nearby and inserted a SIM card. My friend sent him an MMS and the Galaxy could not open the message. The rep tried to open up the message several times and was successful after downloading and installing SAVE MMS from the Android Market. Now all of my MMS messages are in one folder and if i want to view them (as opposed to a thumbnail preview) i save them to my SD card. Unfortunately, if the MMS comes with sound, the two are separated into files which are played separately. I guess this is an issue that can only be resolved by one of us getting a different phone.
I hope this helps ANYONE out there with a similar problem.

When you set the email up on your phone - it would have asked you for two settings - one for incoming mails (POP) and one for outgoing mails (SMTP). Some of these free email providers block POP/SMTP for free users and only provide it for premium (paid) users.

If you have the POP and SMTP settings correct - you should not have any issues receiving or sending emails. Not only do you need to have the exact POP/SMTP addresses, but also set up the SSL/Security settings as directed by your email service provider.

Hello and thanks for reaching out!

First, try a soft reset by pulling out the battery for about 2 minutes and see if that helps. Make sure you are using the original battery and charging accessories that came with your phone as our devices work best that way. If you continue to experience problems, try a factory reset AFTER backing up your personal data. http://bit.ly/OT2gT9

If you need additional assistance please contact us again. You can also reach out to us via twitter or facebook for quicker responses.

Hello and thanks for reaching out!

The battery life greatly depends on the frequency of charges and overall use of the device. Because of this, we are unable to provide a specific life expectancy time frame. To get the most out of your battery, please use these battery saving tips:

Turn off the automatic brightness and set it to the lowest setting. The display is the biggest power user.
Select only 2G if your not using 3G or 3.5G (network settings)
Turn off bluetooth and wifi when not in use
Turn off automatic background syncing
Don't use live wallpapers
Avoid widgets that use live updates
Make sure you close apps properly by going through the menu, hitting home doesnt close apps
You can try apps like startup auditor and autokiller to kill of running background applications.
If you really wanna go crazy use a solid black wallpaper, it wont use any LEDs at all
Some Task Managers seem to work against battery saving and consume more battery doing so ending tasks at regular intervals. Monitor these applications to see if they improve or decrease battery life.
Poor signal strength decreases battery life - Try not to leave you phone in a bag or place that might inhibit the signal strength. With low signal strenght the Galaxy S will consume a larger amount of power to maintain connection with the nearest cell tower or searching for another.

If you need additional assistance please contact us again. You can also reach out to us via twitter or facebook for quicker responses.

I am having a similar problem. I was just on the live chat support and I was informed that Kies mini does not work on 64bit computers. For example, I have Windows Vista 64bit and I was getting the same message. So I guess we have to find some Windows XP computes to make this program work...lame! Hope this helps.

Hi rbcorbin,

Thank you for your inquiry. We're sorry to hear that your phone is freezing when your texting. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

Sometimes your device might seem to slow down or freezes over time, and the biggest reason for this are background applications. These are applications that were not properly closed or shutdown and are still active but minimized. The Task Manager not only lets you see which of these applications are still active in the background but also easily lets you choose which applications to leave running and which to close.

You may use the link provided below for the steps on how to shutdown or close a running applictaion on your phone.

Note: Please copy and paste the entire link on the address bar of your search engine.

If this won't work, we recommend you to perform a Factory reset on the phone.
