Question

My Focus is constantly chiming like you just connected it to the charger.

Seeing that this is a known issue and has been happening for some time now. Has Samsung developed an app for this correction? If not then this is a serious defect in the software or hardware of this phone. I have decided that if Samsung has decided to not correct this defect then I will be going elsewhere for my electronic devices. Understand that I am just a lone consumer but I am npretty sure I am not the only person thinking along the same ground. We just want our phones to work like they should.

Inspect your device for any physical or water damage that may be causing this then check your audio settings to make sure they have not changed.

If that does not work you may want to try resetting your device. You can find instructions on page 11 here http://bit.ly/VRGG7Z. Be sure you backup any data you don't wish to lose prior to resetting.

Question

Is it my battery, the software or the firmware?

Often when I charge my phone all night and remove it from the charger it will turn on and stay on while beeping at me. It should be charged but it thinks there is no, or little charge, and then by not turning off it drains the rest of the charge very quickly. Plus, I can't leave it with the volume on because it won't stop beeping. Sometimes I can go a couple of days without this happening and other times it happens anytime I unplug my phone from the charger. It does not occur on the charger.

Now it has begun to freeze occasionally and I can't make outgoing calls either unless I have the phone plugged into the wall. I haven't had a chance to see if incoming calls work, so those may not be working either. Text messages and the internet do work.

After looking online many people have this issue but no one seems to know what the problem is. I have had this phone for about 14 months and it has only been happening in the last 3 months or so. It is so bad now that I may as well just throw the phone away for how much it doesn't work when I need it! I have tried the most common solution online to take the battery out and then put it back in and that doesn't work reliably. Some days I have to take the battery out multiple times to get it to stop beeping at me and sometimes that never works at all.

I took it back to our local store but they don't even sell the batteries for the phone there (even though they sold me the phone!). They told me to get a battery somewhere else, confirmed it had no water damage, and said if I couldn't figure it out they would tell me how much it would cost to upgrade my phone. I can try a new battery but I will need to order one... is there anything else I can do? Or it is a known problem with a real solution yet? I haven't seen any new updates in Zune...

Hi mmnorman,

Thank you for your inquiry. We understand that your phone is not working properly and we do apologize for the inconvenience this might have caused you.

If the phone keeps on beeping, battery drains easily and it is freezing, these may be resolved with minimal troubleshooting. As an initial troubleshooting step, you may try to do a soft reset by removing the battery at the back of the phone for 30 seconds. Once you restart the phone, navigate the handset and check if the same problem exist. Once troubleshooting has been done to the point of actual failure, we can setup a repair on the handset, should it be determined the problem cannot be resolved over the phone. We can repair the phone, if it is still under warranty and has not been physically damaged.

At your earliest convenience, please call Samsung Customer Support by phone at our toll free number 1-888-987-4357 , between the hours of 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Saturday, Central Standard Time.

Our repair facility will have the phone roughly 5-7 days from the time that it is received. Some dealer locations may offer a loaner phone program while your handset is in repair. While Samsung cannot control the availability of these products or programs in your area, please contact your local provider or dealer if you are in need of a phone, to find out if they are a participating member of this program. If you have any questions regarding this process, please ask the Service Representative at the time of your call.

Additionally, if your device is in warranty or you have insurance through your service provider, some providers do offer a replacement policy on phones which need servicing. In some cases, they may send out a replacement phone and the phone that you are having issues with will be sent back to them in return. For more details on a possible exchange, please contact your Service Provider.

We appreciate your continued interest in Samsung products.

Question

Why is my Samsung Focus (SGH-i917) randomly shutting down?

My phone is all of a sudden randomly giving me the "slide down to shut down" screen. Despite doing everything possible to avoid sliding down, the phone shuts itself off. I have tried a soft reset (removing battery) which has not remedied the problem. Attempting to power it on normally only gives me the white Samsung screen then the phone remains off. The only way for me to start the phone is to have it plugged into the charger and power it on while holding the volume button. If I touch the power button to put the screen to sleep, it powers off again. Why is this happening and how can I fix it?
