The fact that this update is available and fixes quite a few issues with the device and has not yet been released(be it the release is controlled by AT&T) is very concerning for me. Unable to update to 2.2 to fix a couple issues that plague my daily use of this device, being Google Maps/GPS and Exchange mail client.

I have always been a Samsung advocate however this experience will make me think more when choosing a device in the future. I feel that Samsung and Google should be pushing on AT&T to release an update.

My issue with the Captivate as opposed to other phones that I have used and with the far too long delayed release of Froyo is safety. The lack of voice dialing over Bluetooth is a gret safety issue when operating in a vehicle or in an environment where the phone may hinder working with both hands and a call is necessary. Some locales will ticket you for using a hand-held cell phone when driving and it is becoming more common for valid safety issues. If, in fact, Froyo will not be released until November 2011, then I, too, will scrap the phone in favor of one which does allow for the safety feature (i.e., my OLD phone) and will much more carefully select a future replacement - probably NOT a Samsung.

I would like to know as well, I've purchased the Car Dock mount in hope of being able to stream audio but it doesn't until the official Captivate Froyo is released. Kinda makes the mount useless in my opinion.

Unfortunately I believe the answer to this question is NEVER...

Between this issue and lack of Kies support (mini does not count) I will dump this phone at my renewal date and avoid all future Samsung products.

Yes, check AT&T facebook page wallposts. There is a link to download mini kies and Froyo for captivate! I downloaded yesterday and have had no problems so far. Make sure you do the debugging step in the instructions. My download didn't go exactly as illustrated but it did work!

IT IS OFFICIALLY RELEASED, I'VE ALREADY UPDATED MINE AND IT IS awesome ! : ) Just google it and you'll find a link that walks you through it. You'll need to download Kies Mini to perform the update, takes about 20 minutes or so.. Remember to back your information just in case, although when I updated mine it did not appear to delete any of my downloaded apps, music, or contacts. It took FOREVER to release the update, but I'm glad it is finally here.

There is a download on Samsung's site for the drivers. After they are installed, connect your phone and Windows will detect it and install the drivers. Once that is done, you need to go to your phone and mount the USB drive. Do this by pulling down the little window shade menu (touch the top of the screen and slide your finger down). You will see a selection for the USB. Click on it and select to mount the drive. After this you should see a new drive letter in Windows that you can explore.

Ok everyone, I have been at this for a long time but here is what fixed this problem for me.
Be sure USB is not plugged in.

1. Click the 1st button on the bottom of your phone (looks like a half of square with 2 lines in it)
2. Then, click......
A) Settings
B) Applications
C) Development
D) USB Debugging (check this box)
E) USB Setting, Mass Storage

Now plug USB into PC then Phone and it should work! Hope this fixes your problem.

I have read and also have made several attempts to fix the same issues everyone has, without any luck. My phone would simply not connect. I was even considering buying a new computer. Well, believe it or not, I found the solution: the cable. You MUST use the supplied Samsung mini-usb cable which came with the phone, not any other cable you buy out there.

You cannot use any other mini-USB cable, you have to use the mini-USB cable that came with the Captivate phone. I bought two new mini-USB cables to plug up around the house to charge my phone. I was trying to use one of them to transfer my photo's to my computer, and it would not reconize the phone. I read the answer that edusch - New York, NY gave, I went and got the cable that came with the phone, pluged it in the phone and it worked instantly! Many Captivate owners are having this problem - myself included. The phone will shut down when idle after a full charge and unplugged from the charger. I am on my 2nd Captivate as of today and testing it - charge it, unplug and let it sit idle for 10-15 minutes. Google for "samsung captivate shutting (down or off)" and you will see pages of discussion about the issue.

It's a very common issue. it appears to happen when the phone sleeps with a fully or near fully charged battery and when the phone goes to sleep for more than a few minutes. you can search it on the WWW and you will see all of the other folks that have the issue. it appears to be random in that many folks do not have the issue. We are waiting for Samsung to come out with a fix for the issue, you can request a new phone under warranty from your phone manufacturer. Maybe your new one won't do it.

My first Captivate worked fine for first 2 weeks, then started shutting down after it goes to sleep. I returned the phone and got a second one, and it started doing the same thing almost immediately. I decided to troubleshoot myself, and after web research, I tried one thing that seemed to work: under the Settings>Display settings>Screen timeout, I changed option from 30 seconds to 2 minutes. I did this 2 weeks ago, and since then, the phone has not shut down not even once. I can only hope this holds.

I had the same problem, after first charge, the phone simply shut down after the screen went to sleep. AT&T and Samsung Support both said this, of course, was the first time anyone had heard of it, though they did say it would take six days turn around to fix it.

Got the RMA and exactly six days later after a component was replaced I had the phone back in perfect working order. Contact Samsung Support!

My first phone (with OS 2.1) worked ok for the first 2 days (probably not long enough to really tell) then it recieved an OTA update to 2.1 update 1. I gave it a full charge overnight and the following night it turned itself off. I repeated the scenario by fully charging it overnight and the second night it turned off. I took that phone back and got a new phone which interestingly came from the factory with OS 2.1 update 1. The new phone hasn't had any problems for a month now. Also of interest there seemed to be some subtle differences between the 2.1 update 1 from the factory and the OTA updated version; can't even remember what they were, but some things seemed different.

Regarding the OUTLOOK for your CAPTIVATE phone, Samsung does not provide an application by which to do this. However, there are third-party applications available through the Android Market that will support this.

However, please bear in mind that Samsung does not support 3rd party apps and services with any of our device.

If you are having issues with the use of a specific 3rd party application or service, we recommend contacting the manufacturer of that application or service for compatibility and support assistance.

A better option is to use your Google account do do that. When you set up the G-mail account you were also given a google calendar. Go to calendar.google.com & hit 'Help". In the left column there's a header "access options", go there & then go to Sync with Microsoft Outlook. It'll have you download a very small applications which will sit in your tray & sync your Outlook calendar to your Google one. Any changes made to you Google calendar will be automatically sent to your phone & vice versa (i.e. if you add/change an event on your phone calendar it will change the google one & that change will be propagated to your Outlook calendar, depending on the frequency you set for syncing Outlook/Google that can be in a few minutes or in a few hours, it's up to you how often to sync). I've been using this option for years even before there was an Android phone & it works fine.

Unfortunately, there are no configurable option on how to sync your SGH-I897 (Captivate) device with Microsoft Outlook Calendar and it is not being supported. The Samsung Kies in the market is not the U.S version application and will not be supported if downloaded in your phone.

The only way to sync this device to your Outlook is through an Exchange.

The Mini Kies at Samsung website is available for this phone to update your firmware. The version 1.5.3 was released OTA.

The best answer:
Download the "My Phone Explorer" app from the Android Market and install on your phone. You will also need to download the PC client software and install it on your pc. You can select the options/settings for what you want to sync and how to sync, so go through the options very carefully.. The only drawback is that tasks are not synchronized between your phone and outlook. This program will sync., contacts, text messages, media and calendar events. Otherwise, this program works well and it's free. The developer does ask for a donation everytime the program closes on your pc, but it's not required to download or use the software on your phone or pc.

As far as I know, the voice dialing feature will be available once Android 2.2 Froyo is released for the phone. If you want to chance it, if you hold down the search button, google search will come up and you can say "Call ______" This will allow you to pseudo-voice dial. Bluetooth headsets are not supported until Froyo is released =/

I am assuming that your contacts are Google contacts, and not phone-only contacts. I'm sure there are other ways, but the only way I have found is to create a phone-based contact with just the name and the ringtone that you want the contact to have. Then, go to the contact in the Google synchronized contacts, and link the contact with the phone-based contact with the custom ringtone you just made.

I had this problem too. I had to save each contact to my phone (left corner when in a contact, click- save to phone). This means that while most contacts are saved to your sim, you also need to save them to the phone in order to customize ringtones, which means duplicate contacts I know but found no other way.

Thank you for your inquiry. As I have checked the specification of the phone. For you to connect the phone to the PC to download music, it would require you to have the memory card inside the phone and a data cable that is part of your standard box contents. Once you already have the requirements, then do the following steps:
Select Menu.
Select Settings.
Select Applications.
Select USB settings.
Choose Mass Storage (even if its already selected)
Press Home key to return to the home screen.
Connect the USB cable to the device.
Connect the opposite end of the USB cable to the computer.
Bring down the Notification Bar, and select USB Connected.
Select Mount

Check on the computer screen if it will recognize the device and Removable Disk will pop up on the screen. Select open folder to view files. Choose Audio/Music folder, drag and drop/copy and paste the file from the source folder going to the destination folder.

answer 3
For those using a USB cable it is important to know
that the Phone has three modes that the USB port
will operate on.
Kies,
Media player
Mass Storage
and
Ask on connection
OK that looks like four ;)

Kies and Media storage connections support a handshake/ protocol
specific to those functions and also need a laptop application to
interact with the phone with these protocols. The Kies protocol
is supported by the Mini-Kies application from Samsung and is
used for firmware updates.

If "Ask on connection" is chosen make sure to answer the
question. In some cases this notifier window can be missed
which is why a lot of people do better by selecting the Mass Storage
option.

Most people connect most often as a Mass storage device.
When connected as a storage device the phone will show up as
one or two file system icons on the desktop or under the computer
icon. Then drag drop music in a folder that your music/ media player can
access. Some music and video players have phone+computer software
package pairs and can connect via the "Media player" option.

Do not forget to unmount/ "safely remove" your mass storage device
before disconnecting the USB data cable. There are some USB power only
cables. The power only cable is less expensive so shop with care.

A Micro-SD card is a good thing to have. It greatly increases your storage.

Hi USNSeal25,

Thank you for your inquiry. The SCH-I500 Fascinate does not have a front camera feature.

The one that you could see on the upper left side of your phone near the speaker is the Ambient Light Sensor/Proximity Sensor.

Ambient Light Sensor - The ambient light sensor will report to the handset the amount of light that is near the sensor. The ambient light sensor is utilized for automatic backlight brightness.

Proximity Sensor - The proximity sensor allows the handset to perform certain functions based on objects detected near. This allows the handset to disable the touch screen while on a call to prevent unintentional activation of on screen options during a call.

Download the Samsung Kies program (Google it or download from Samsung website). The program is GREAT. It allows you to sync music, pictures, videos etc. very easily! Once this is on your computer it seems to automatically download the driver for the phone. Oh yes, I read many reviews that said you can't sync with Outlook. But the Kies program WILL sync with Outlook (contacts and calendar). Also, go to settings>applications >USB...select ask on connection. Now whenever u plug to the computer you'll get a prompt from the phone asking if u want to sync using Kies, Media, mass storage, or PC (try each so you will know which is best for you). Use both these tips, your connection problems should be resolved.

Hi there! Thank you for your inquiry.

Skype is a third party application that you can download for the phone, however since it’s a third party program, we do not have any details regarding the compatibility of this application on the phone.

Although the phone supports Android Market, but that is an open market where application creators can post their application.

I would suggest that if this application is not working then you may try to delete this on the phone instead and check from the Android Market other applications that will suit your specification.

For further details on the available application for the Android phones, you may visit www.android.com/market .

I just hope that this piece of advice will work for you.

The Samsung chat room support person gave me the url for the Captivate manual. She said the link is no longer online because the website is under construction. It's a pdf document and you would be advised to save it in your documents file in case the url goes missing again.

http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/UM/201007/20100719053159265/ATT_I897_Captivate_F4_Eng.pdf

I finally gave up on finding a usb driver. You can upload pictures to your laptop or PC using an SD card. It's not as convenient but far less frustrating than trying to find something that, apparently, isn't available or compatible with all OS.

Hope this help,

I recently switched to a samsung Focus, (windows 7 OS) and it is the fastest, cleanest phone that i have ever used. The app store is kind of lacking though... It is no where near the android app store, but it is a really awesome phone. I'm not sure if this helped or not, but from what i've been hearing, everyone has been having problems with the captivate after the gingerbread update. Good Luck. :)

I have had the same issue since upgrading to gingerbread as well - I think I figured out the tethering issue but I haven't figured out why it takes longer to disconnect a call...

For tethering here is what I did and it only has been 12 hrs since I did this but I haven't seen the tethering issue since so I have my fingers crossed..

I hooked my phone back up to my computer with usb cable..went to - settings - wireless & network - tethering and portable hotspot and put a check mark in the box next to USB tethering. A small USB icon appeared in the task bar at top of the screen. I unplugged the phone from the computer (the icon remained# and then I went back to the home screen and then pulled down the task bar and selected "clear" and the tethering #usb) symbol went away. And so far - no sign of the tethering message and I would have seen it by now - about a dozen times or so...maybe that will make the calls disconnect quicker too. I haven't called anyone since doing this...

I to wanted to throw this phone away with all the issues since gingerbread upgrade but honestly can't afford to. Hope this helps you too...
