Questions & Answers for samsung Samsung Impression™ Full Qwerty Touchscreen Cell Phone

Question

Is there a common problem with the Touch screen of the SGH-A877 not working and can it be fixed easily

I have an SGH-A877 less than a year old and I turned it on this morning to find when it comes up to my log-in screen I cannot do anything. The touch screen is just not working. The phone is in perfect condition, has never been dropped and has never gotten even slightly wet. What is doing this and how can I fix it without bringing it in for service and having it cost me $.
PLEASE HELP!

I believe there is a design flaw with the video cable in this cell phone. The same thing happened to me. I took my phone apart and discovered the video cable had cracked due to opening and closing the slider.

I had been told to take the battery out and put it back and that would fix it but it did not. I tried it again a few days later this time leaving the battery out for about ten minutes and this fixed it.

BEWARE: There is a hard reset option that someone found, but think of it, HARD RESET..... I was trying to transfer my pictures from my old touch-screen-not-working device to my computer, since I have received the replacement device and have 10 days to return the non-working device..... the USB options were able to be toggled with the up/down arrows on the slide out keyboard, but would not SELECT, because that is a TOUCH-SCREEN option....grrrrowl (why can't they provide keyboard options for this??????). I saw the hard reset option on this message board, and thought, hmmm, maybe this will work to get my screen to work just one last time.... IT DID NOT... It ERASED all of my pictures, my call history, probably my contacts.... and who knows what else... I feel really stupid right now, because I do actually know the term HARD RESET means back to original settings....and didn't think before acting.... SO BEWARE BEFORE YOU HARD RESET ANYTHING.... I LOST IT ALL. :( ALSO, idk why I have no memory card in this phone, perhaps this could have been avoided by having a memory card to hold my pics.

My screen just 'froze' on my impression too. I found a way to hard reset even though my screen isn't working. on your qwerty keypad type: *2767*3855#
You will see a message to wait while the phone shuts down and restarts. Hope this works for you.

I do believe this is a common issue as my Impression's screen went totally blank in less than 2 months after activating it, basically making it useless, although I could still make calls on it by using the qwerty keypad and answer by pressing the button at the bottom even though I could not see who was calling. I know two other people who had the same issue, one after six months of use and another after only one month. Now my replacement phone of six months is doing what you are saying. I can see my screen but no matter how much I tap it, it will not do anything. I have text messages on my home screen that are a week old and still have no idea what they say. Once again I can only make and receive calls on it by using the qwerty keypad. As of tonight there is yet another replacement in the process of being shipped to me.

We can repair the phone, if it is still under warranty and has not been physically damaged.

Hi, Mblbjb!

The SGH-A877 (Impression) handset features four different methods to transfer pictures from the phone to a PC. The steps for each are detailed below:

Please Note: The SGH-A877 (Impression) phone includes support for Digital Rights Management (DRM) which allows you to play or view some purchased or subscription content. These copyright protections may prevent some images, videos, music (including ringtones) and other content from being copied, modified, transferred or forwarded.

>Via the New Samsung PC Studio

Important! The Bluetooth feature must first be disabled before initiating a USB connection with the handset. Prior to connecting the USB cable to the handset, install the latest version of the Samsung PC Studio application. This application installs the necessary USB drivers onto your PC. For a free download of PC Studio, go to http://www.samsung.com/us/support/supportDownloadCenter.do?prd_ia_cd=N0000000&prd_mdl_cd=SGH-A877RBAATT&prd_mdl_name=SGH-A877

Thank you for your inquiry. If you are trying to unlock the phone and it says phone freeze, you can call our technical support so we can setup a repair on the product. If your phone is not doing anything, the screen won’t work or respond to any touch, most issues may be resolved with minimal troubleshooting by taking the battery ourt and putting it right back again, if that didn’t work, still you need to call us so we can set up a repair on your product.

We can repair the phone, if it is still under warranty and has not been physically damaged.

If it is deemed, after troubleshooting, that the handset requires service/repair, our Repair Administrators will create a Return Material Authorization (RMA#) for the device. Provided there is no physical damage to the phone and the failure is not due to any type of liquid damage, the phone will be repaired under warranty.

If the phone has experienced damage or is out of warranty by date (it was purchased more than one year ago) the standard charge will likely apply for the repairs to your phone. Charges start at $75.36 and can increase, depending upon the nature and severity of the issue. We are only able to arrange payment for these repairs through credit card (Visa or MasterCard).

For troubleshooting and questions related to possible repairs we invite you to contact Samsung Customer Care at your earliest convenience through our toll free number 1-888-987-HELP (1-888-987-4357).

Should you desire additional assistance resolving this, we invite you to call Samsung Customer Support by phone at our toll free number 1-888-987-4357 between the hours 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Saturday, Central Standard Time.

Hi there!

Yes. The SGH-a877 (Impression) handset has two different ways to transfer files between phone and computer using a USB cable. And those are via New Samsung PC Studio and via Windows Explorer (mass storage). If you want to use the New Samsung PC Studio, you will need to download the software and in Windows Explorer (mass storage), you will need a memory card. Each steps will be discuss below.

>Via the New Samsung PC Studio

Important!: The Bluetooth feature must first be disabled before initiating a USB connection with the handset. Prior to connecting the USB cable to the handset, install the latest version of the Samsung PC Studio application. This application installs the necessary USB drivers onto your PC. For a free download of PC Studio, go to http://www.samsung.com/us/support/supportDownloadCenter.do?prd_ia_cd=N0000003&prd_mdl_cd=SGH-A877RBAATT&prd_mdl_name=SGH-A877

Note: The SGH-A877 (Impression) phone includes support for Digital Rights Management (DRM) which allows you to play or view some purchased or subscription content. These copyright protections may prevent some images, videos, music (including ringtones) and other content from being copied, modified, transferred or forwarded.

WARNING: DO NOT DISCONNECT USB CABLE DURING THE FILE TRANSFER

STEPS:

1. From the standby screen, insure that the USB mode setting is set to either PC Studio or Ask on Connection

• From the standby screen, press Menu
• Press Settings
• Press Connectivity
• Press Select USB Mode
• Press Samsung PC Studio
• Press Save to keep the USB Mode setting

2. Connect the USB cable to both the phone's Power/Accessory Interface connector & the PC's USB slot

 When successfully connected, the phone will show the connected icon on the top of the display

3. If prompted, Select the PC Studio USB setting
4. The New Samsung PC Studio program will automatically appear on the PC
5. Click on the SGH-A877 icon , located in the top right corner, to open a box showing the handset's internal memory
6. Double click on the Pictures or Videos folder (Internal Memory)
7. Click on the My Computer icon , located in the upper left corner, to open a box showing the PC's internal memory
8. Navigate to the PC's picture or video location or destination
9. Drag and Drop or Copy (or Cut) and Paste the pictures or videos between the My Computer box and the SGH-A877 box or vice versa

>Via Windows Explorer (Mass Storage)
Note: If the Bluetooth feature is currently active on the phone, USB communication between devices will not be available. To transfer files to or from the phone, turn off the Bluetooth functionality.

Important: In order to transfer pictures (via Windows Explorer & a USB cable) to a PC the pictures MUST be located on a formatted microSD Memory Card. The microSD memory card must first be formatted, by the phone, in order for the handset to create the destination folders.

TO FORMAT MEMORY CARD:

• Insert a microSD memory card into the memory card slot, located on the right side under the battery cover
• From the standby screen, press Menu
• Press Settings
• Scroll down then press Memory Management
• Press Memory Card Details
• Press Format
• Press Yes to confirm formatting the microSD Memory Card

Caution!: Do not repeatedly format a Memory Card as this shortens it's service life

Note: The minimum size limit for the microSD memory card is 32MB. This phone does support the use of a microSDHC 16GB capacity memory card. However, for optimal performance Samsung recommends using a card no larger than 2GB.

To transfer Picture/Video files, using Windows Explorer & a USB cable, between the phone and a PC follow the steps below:

1. From the standby screen, insure that the USB mode setting is set to either Mass Storage or Ask on Connection

 From the standby screen, press Menu
 Press Settings
 Press Connectivity
 Press Select USB Mode
 Press Mass storage
 Press Save to keep the USB Mode setting

2. Connect the USB cable to both the phone's Power/Accessory Interface connector & the PC's USB slot
When successfully connected, the phone will show the connected icon on the top of the display
3. If prompted, Select the Mass Storage USB setting
4. If prompted, click "Open folder to view files using Windows Explorer" on the new Removable Disk screen or open Windows Explorer manually
5. Navigate to the picture/video file location on the memory card or PC
6. Drag n Drop or copy & paste the picture/video file into the desired destination on the PC or the Pictures or Videos folders on the handset.

Hi mcnewman,

Thank you for your inquiry. Regarding your concern, the phone uses NITZ (Network Initiated Time Zone) integrated into the handset's software and will automatically update, if enabled, the time and date while inside the AT&T digital network. If you roam outside of the AT&T Service Area, or turn on the phone in an analog roaming area, you will need to set the time manually.

To change the automatic update settings follow the steps below:

1. From the standby screen, press Menu
2. Press Settings
3. Press Time & Date
4. Press the Time Zone Updating drop down arrow then press one of the following Auto Update options:
* Manual Only: manually set the Time, Date and DST setting according to the current time zone
* Automatic: phone automatically updates the Time and Date according to the current time zone using the network service
* Prompt First: you are prompted before a time change is applied
5. Press Save to set the Time and Date settings
Tip: Automatic updates of time and date do not change the time you have set for alarm settings or calendar memos

Note: Changes may not take effect until the handset is power cycled (turned off then turned on again)

We thank you for your patronage of Samsung products. Have a good day.

I found that my memory card was causing the delay. Now the phone doesn't even recognize that there is a memory card in it at all...not sure why. However, ever since that happened, it is super fast to take a picture and load photos

The Android Camera app is just slow. I have used mine for many many pictures without problems, but it is very slow. If you are waiting longer than say 5-10 seconds that would indicate an issue I have not seen.

Hi MrAndre76.

Thank you for your inquiry. From the Standby screen, tap the arrow on the lower part of the screen to open the Widget Tab. Tap and drag the "NO EVENT" icon back into the Widget Tab, and close the widget tab.

We thank you for your patronage of Samsung products.

This is something that slides out of the widgets for some unknown reason. It doesn't happen to me, but it happens to my husband all the time. Just open the widgets by touching the arrow and then slide the "no event" widget back to the widget list. I also removed "no event" from my list of widgets, so that's probably why I never see it.

This is the method I use because I cant find the Samsung Kies software at the moment. In the Samsung product support section of the website find your product and download and install the Software Drivers onto your PC. *You might need to reboot the PC

http://www.samsung.com/us/support/downloads/SGH-I897ZKAATT

*Go into the phone menu, then into APPLICATIONS, then into USB Settings.
*Change the settings to Mass Storage Drive. Press the HOME button.
* Connect the phone to your PC's USB port.
*On the phone you might have to bring down the notification bar and select to Mount the device.
* On your PC you can choose to browse the connected device's files.
*You can copy and paste from the phones folders.
* Pictures taken with the device are usually in the DCIM folder.

On the phone, Settings > Applications > USB settings change to prompt you when you connect the phone, this will just make it easier to do the 2.2 update when you are ready. Once this has been done and you connect the phone, select mass storage on the phone, pull down the status bar and mount the drive(s), and 1 or 2 USB drivers should then show up on your PC ... assuming you have installed the USB drivers. Not entirely sure this is required, but this works just fine for me. Be sure not to delete or move any of the already existing folders on the phone's internal or external SD cards. Android needs this stuff where they are, but you can create your own folders if you wish for music, pictures, and videos. Then when you are done moving files, do a safe remove from the PC just like with a regular USB flash drive, pull the status bar back down and "turn off" USB storage.

If under warranty please do so. Taking these things apart yourself will void any warranty. If no luck try your local craigslist or your provider.

Hello and thanks for reaching out!

Try taking out the battery for about 2 minutes and see if that helps. If that does not work, you may want to try a factory reset AFTER backing up your personal data. http://bit.ly/LXXfvq

If you need additional assistance please contact us again. You can also reach out to us via twitter or facebook for quicker responses.

Thank you and have a great day!
