So sorry you are experiencing this issue! Have you tried a soft reset by pulling the battery out for about 2 minutes? Also make sure you have not added any recent applications/files that may be to blame. Try removing these apps/files and clearing the cache. If that does not work, try a factor/hard reset AFTER backing up your personal data first. Factory reset: http://bit.ly/KzplMQ

PIN OR RESET

I BOUGHT THIS PHONE USED ON EBAY, TO LAST ME TIL IT WAS TIME TO GET A NEW PHONE SINCE MY FAIRLY NEW, EXPENSIVE SAMSUNG CAPTIVATE POOPED OUT ON ME- THE CHARGE PORT JUST QUIT TAKING A CHARGE AND I REALLY COULD NOT AFFORD TO HAVE IT ALL REPLACED. ANYHOW, WHEN I BOUGHT THIS PHONE I WAS UNAWARE IT WAS PASSWORD LOCKED. THE PEOPLE THAT SOLD IT SAID THEIR CHILD USED IT LONG AGO AND NOW DO NOT REMEMBER THE PASSCODE/PIN. SINCE I AM NOT INTERESTED IN USING ANY OF THE DATA STORED IN THE PHONE IS IT POSSIBLE TO DO A HARD RESET WITHOUT THE PIN? I KNOW SOME OTHER SAMSUNG PHONES YOU CAN JUST PRESS A SERIES OF SOFT KEYS ON THE BODY OF THE PHONE. IS THIS POSSIBLE? THANKS.

Thank you for your inquiry. We understand that you would like to reset the phone, since it has a pin lock and we're sorry to hear that.

Please try to use default passcodes 0000 or 00000000.

PIN lock is the actual lock code saved on the sim card inserted in your phone, not on the phone.

For options to possibly unlock your sim card or reset your phone to unlock it, we advise you to contatc your service provider.

Warning!: All User Data such as contacts, messages, pictures, videos, and music will be permanently deleted.

To reset the handset, to the factory default settings, follow the steps below:

From the standby screen, press Menu
Press Settings
Press Phone
Press Reset Phone
Press Yes to Reset the handset's settings to the factory defaults
Enter the Password then press on OK (Default is last 4 digits of the phone number)
Please see Restore Phone to remove all personal information and reset to factory defaults.

Question

How can I increase the volume when connected to my car's Sync system?

Until recently, the volume was adequate. Now, it cannot be heard above road noise, the AC or any other external sound. An identical model phone works fine on the Sync, so I know it is my phone, not the Sync.

Regarding your concern, there is no need to install any software on the computer for you to connect the handset with your PC. All you need to have is a memory card inside the handset and a data cable then set the phone to mass storage.

To connect the phone to the computer, please follow the steps below:
Pull out and up the memory card slot cover
Insert the formatted microSD card into the memory card slot
Connect the USB data cable to both the handset and the USB port on the PC
If Select USB Mode appears on the display press the clear key to return to the standby screen OR if the MTP Connect to the PC... appears on the display, press OK then with Yes highlighted press OK to disconnect from the PC
From the standby screen, press OK for Menu
Select Settings & Tools
Select Tools
Select USB Mass Storage
From the PC, double click on the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop
Double click on the newly created drive letter (which may appear as an icon or text, depending on your View settings)
Double click on the folder to view the contents
Copy and paste or drag n drop the files to/from the destination on the PC
From the handset, press OK for Disconnect
With Yes highlighted, press OK then remove the USB data cable from both the handset and PC

Although the handset features traditional speed dial entries, within the widget bar is a widget called Buddy List which allows you to quickly place calls to the favorite contact entries in the contact list. Once you have stored contact phone numbers in the Address Book, you can also add them to your contact favorites list for quick dialing.
