We had the same problem on my Samsung RSG257AARS, was unable to securely lock the door handles in place, thus they frequently became loose and wobbly. I contacted Samsung and they sent me new handles. They look the same except for the part that connects to the refrigerator which appears to be a slightly different design and are white in color instead of gray. Also the new handles are considerably lighter as if they are made out of plastic instead of metal.
In any case, we have had the new handles for over a couple of months now. So far, all is well; they no longer wobble or loosen. The only downside: the new handles squeak a bit when opening the door. We can live with that little problem though.
BTW.. When I contacted Samsung about this issue, the agent asked how many handles were on the refrigerator. My answer was two. Guess what.. they sent me two pairs (a total of 4) new handles. Now have an extra pair that I doubt I will be using in the near future..lol…. Will gladly give away to anyone who needs them. (I live near St Louis MO)

Yes they can, but very carefully. On the sides and bottom edge of the front face plate of the drawers, you will find "push" tabs that are peaking through the plastic. The tabs are "white" in color, and are part of the white handle and front edge trim. You can depress the tabs or pry the plastic away from them (very gently). There are also 3 smaller, less noticeable tabs, on the front bottom lip of the drawers. Once all tabs are depressed the front "face plate" will detach. The white trim piece will also come loose from the assembly. I just did this for all 3 of my drawers yesterday because of food/debris that was caught in the seems. Please be very careful as I can see how Samsung would discourage this. The tabs are very delicate and could be brittle and break depending on the age/etc. Re-assembly is a snap, literally. Take note of the position of the white trim and return to it's original place. The front cover should snap right back on, and much easier than it was taken off. Good luck!

The drawers in the RSG257 are not designed to come apart for cleaning. I would suggest soaking the drawers in warm soapy water to help clean in the crevices.

Question

Why did my ice maker stop making ice and when I press the test button nothing happens?

Stopped a few days ago but when I tinkered with it (took the ice bucket out and pulled the cover off the ice maker mechanism) it mysteriously started again. It has stopped again and this time the tinkering did not get it started.

I'm sorry to hear you're having this issue. There are several factors that can effect the ability of the icemaker to make ice. First, check to make sure the Ice Off button has not been pressed. If the Ice Off icon is illuminated, press the Ice Off button again to activate the icemaker. Next, check your water supply - is the water dispenser working properly? In order to operate the icemaker properly, water pressure of 20~125 psi is required. Check the freezer temperature - is it set at or below the recommended -4ºF?

If, after reviewing each of these items, you continue to experience this issue, please call 800-SAMSUNG or use the Live Chat option on the product's support page to speak with an agent who can assist you further.

Attached is a picture of the test switch on your ice maker. Please be sure to press and hold the button for a full 8 seconds. I would use a watch. If you go over 8 seconds that is fine, but under 8 seconds won't help at all. This will get your ice maker going again. Also, make sure that the words "Ice Off" are not illuminated on your display panel at all and that the ice bucket is properly seated in place.

Thank you for the question. The RSG257AARS and other Samsung side by side refrigerators do not have the ability to turn the lights off for Sabbath mode. Many of the French Door models, however, do have a way of "tricking" the lights for the Sabbath. If you're in the process of selecting a refrigerator and would like to consider the French Door for this reason, here's what you can do to make this work:

1) Find the two locations on the top of the plastic piece above the front of the refrigerator where the word 'switch' is embossed in raised letters. 2) Tape magnets just below these two locations, on the front of the plastic cover. Once both magnets are placed correctly, the lights will turn off. 3) The freezer lights are controlled by a button that gets compressed when the drawer is closed. The button is located on the left side of the freezer wall. Simply tape the button down during the Sabbath, and the lights will remain off.

If you find you're interested in the new RF4287 Four-Door French Door model, the lights illuminating the middle Flex Zone Drawer can also be turned off by positioning a magnet over a rectangular section on the front edge of the refrigerator case that contacts the right inner edge of the Flex Zone Drawer as it closes.

It is important to note that if the refrigerator thinks the doors are closed when in fact they are open, the fan may come on, dissipating all the cold air from inside the unit. The magnets should be removed when Sabbath is over.

Thank you for the question. It sounds like you’ve done everything you can. The only other thing I can think of is to try to dispense water from the dispenser. You should be fine. Just run 2 or 3 gallons of water through the dispenser once you hook it back up. That will freshen up the lines and tank.

Question

How do you get the front handles to lock into place?

I've looked at the instructions and it says pull down until the handles click into place. I've made sure the handles are facing up as instructed, but I've pulled down with a lot of force and there's no click. The handle does slide downward, but it isn't locked into place as I can lif the handle right off of the fridge. I'm worried if I pull any harder, I'll do harm to the door, handle or the hinges. Is there some trick to getting them to click?

Thank you for the question. Besides maintaining a very cold temperature in the freezer compartment of your RSG257AARS, it is important to make sure the water pressure and flow are adequate for making ice. The supplied water pressure should be 20~125 psi, which should fill a 6 ounce cup in about 10 seconds. Check the supplied water valve to make sure it's turned on all the way and the lines are free of bends or kinks. You can also try removing the water filter temporarily to see if the pressure improves. Since a clogged or partially clogged water filter can effect the speed at which the ice trays are filled, it may be necessary to change the filter regardless of age. If the water pressure is sufficient, try resetting the icemaker by pressing the test/reset button as instructed on page 17 of the user manual. I would also suggest adjusting the temperature to the recommended -2°F for the freezer and 38°F for the refrigerator to ensure the water lines are not freezing. You can then use the Power Freeze option on the control panel to help increase the icemaking.

Finally, please be aware that it usually takes about 90 minutes for a tray of ice to be produced under ideal circumstances, which includes minimizing the frequency that the door is opened. Based on this, you could expect the icemaker to produce approximately 100-120 cubes per day.

For additional assistance, please feel free to call 800-SAMSUNG to speak with an agent who will be happy to help.

The RSG257 shelves are not designed to fit into the area of the refrigerator that holds the crisper drawers. If you remove the drawers and attempt to replace them with shelves, you'll find they will not fit due to the location of the water reservoir. In addition, the clear plastic divider on top of the lower crisper drawer is not designed to hold items as if it were a shelf.

Thank you for the question. You should be able to reinstall a filter after it has been removed, though if the filter is clogged or partially clogged then it may not allow water to flow properly. Samsung does not recommend operating the water dispenser or icemaker in the RSG257 without a filtration system in place, since this could lead to damaged water lines from mineral deposits or debris.

At the recommended 20-125 psi water pressure, a 6 oz glass of water should dispense in about 10 seconds. If yours is slower than this, please check to make sure the water valve is turned on all the way and the lines are free of bends or kinks that could obstruct flow. Try bleeding air from the lines by dispensing 5-6 gallons of water. If, after air is removed, the water is still coming out slow, try removing the filter temporarily. If water dispenses faster without the filter, then you may need to replace the filter cartridge with a new one. Though the filter usually needs to be replaced after about 6 months, it may need to be replaced sooner depending on usage and water purity.

Question

Is it normal for the unit to run almost continuously?

Our RSG257AARS, that we've had for five days, has a fan and/or compressor running almost all the time. We timed it and seems to be turning back on after only 15 minute pause. Is this normal? The hum of the fan (or compressor?) running for these long periods is annoying. Please advise.

The compressor and fans in the RSG257AARS are designed to run as needed to maintain the set temperature. If you've selected Power Freeze, the compressor will run continuously to quickly freeze items or speed up ice production. If you do not wish to use Power Freeze, you can deactivate this feature by pressing the Power Freeze button on the control panel. Adding unfrozen items to the freezer, or room temperature or warmer items to your refrigerator can raise the internal temperature and cause the cooling system to run in order to return to the set temperature. When the refrigerator is first installed, it can take time for the system to stabilize, reaching the set temperature, making ice, filling and cooling the water storage tank, etc.

Other things you can do to help reduce the need for the compressor to run is to keep the doors closed as much as possible, make sure the vents in the refrigerator and freezer are not blocked, set the compartment temperatures at the recommended -4ºF (freezer)/38ºF (fridge), and ensure you have at least the minimum clearance for air circulation around the outside of the unit (1" on top, 3/8" behind, 1/4" on each side). Making sure the refrigerator is properly leveled, as instructed on page 13 of the user manual, is also important.

The cooling system components of the RSG257AARS are enclosed, so do not require cleaning or vacuuming. I would suggest using a cloth or vacuum to keep the rear vents free of dust. You may also want to review the "Cleaning the Refrigerator" section on page 25 of the User Manual, which can be downloaded as a pdf file from this website for your convenience.

Thank you for the question. It is not unusual for the digital temperature on the display to vary by up to 4 degrees compared to the actual temperature in the refrigerator or freezer, and it is very difficult to get an accurate temperature reading inside the compartments because:
- Hot air rises, and cold air falls. This can effect the shelf temperatures.
- Opening the door to read the thermometer allows cold air to escape, and warm air to enter causing an inaccurate temperature reading.
- Refrigeration thermometers are calibrated differently than regular household thermometers.

That said, if your RSG257AARS is varying by as much as 10 degrees, it may require service. To initiate service through Samsung, please submit an online service request through the link below, or call 800-SAMSUNG to speak with an agent who will be happy to assist you.

Question

Removing fingerprints and water marks difficult

Have tried using dish washing soap, sponge and hot water, then drying with microfiber cloth but still find that the marks and streaks are not completely removed. Are there commercial products that are safe to use such as Hope's Stainless Cleaner, Pledge Wipes, Wieman's products, etc.

To remove watermarks from stainless steel, try applying a small amount of WD40 to a clean cloth and wiping the effected area. It may be necessary to wipe the whole door down for a uniform appearance so one part doesn't look cleaner than the rest.

I hope this helps to remove the fingerprints and marks,
