Lowes does carry this model, but it's possible that other retailers do, as well. To find the retailer nearest to you that carries any particular model, including the RFG298AARS, I would suggest clicking on the "Where To Buy" button on the right side of the product home page. From there, you can input your zip code and find a list of retailers near you.

Question

Did you add LED lighting to the 298AARS?

According to the specifications for the model RFG298AARS, the interior light in the refrigerator section appears to be incadescent, however in looking at my newly delivered fridge of the same model, the interior light is clearly a LED panel. Was this an in-flight change? Or is there an error in the specs?

Question

Change in Ice Maker Design?

Was there a change in the upper ice maker? In your product video on initializing the ice maker, it clearly shows a large plastic auger, which I can see could cause the need to initialize the ice maker- as it appears to block the flow of ice.
But the ice maker in my new model has a thick wire auger similar to a giant corkscrew. This seems to allow the ice to more easily distribute itself as it drops into the empty ice bin, minimizing the need to follow the initialization process. At least that's my observation, as the ice nicely distributed itself and didn't pile up in the back of the ice maker.

I'm glad to hear you are having a favorable experience. Samsung does make adjustments and upgrades, as needed, as new models are released. The initialization procedure is appropriate for the RFG298 as well as earlier models as a troubleshooting measure, if necessary. Due to the fact that the ice cubes drop in the rear of the bin, some customers find it helpful to follow the initialization procedure regardless of whether the auger is plastic or metal.

Question

Is there a can rack for this model?

I just purchased this model and really like it. Unfortunately, it didn't come with any sort of can rack for the door. I saw can racks in the door of other Samsung models. Is there a can rack available for this model (RFG298 series)? Mine also didn't come with a wine rack, but that's not a big deal.

Samsung does not actually make a "can rack" for our French Door refrigerators. Many customers opt to store canned beverages in the CoolSelect Pantry Drawer for convenient access and controlled temperature. I would suggest using the 34-degree "Chill" setting cautiously, as the +/- 2-degree temperature variance could cause the cans to freeze. You may find the 38-degree "Fresh" setting to be a better choice for keeping beverages cold.

answer 1
The RFG298AARS measures 35-3/4" wide x 68-1/2" high (without hinges, 69-3/4" with hinges) x 33" deep (with doors). Samsung recommends leaving at least 1" on each side, 2" behind and 2" above the unit to allow sufficient air flow for the cooling system to work properly. Adequate circulation also helps the system to operate most efficiently, which can help reduce energy usage.

The dimensions you've given (36" w x 69" h x 36" d) would not appear to allow the necessary space for circulation, unless the cabinets on the sides and above the refrigerator are actually recessed from the edges. If this is not the case, and there is no way to increase the dedicated space, then you might want to consider one of Samsung's 33" models instead, in the interest of maximizing performance and efficiency.

Thank you for considering Samsung!

I'm sorry to hear about your damaged door! Unfortunately, I'm not aware of a method for "repairing" stainless steel. I would suggest checking with your local home improvement store for advice. If you are not able to find a solution for repairing the damage, then you may want to contact Samsung Parts for pricing and availability to replace the door (www.samsungparts.com or 800-627-4368).

Question

breakaway shelf? Platinum vs. stainless?

I like this model very much, but Lowe's does not have it in the store and I can not tell from the gallery pictures if one of the shelves on the right side of the refrigerator slides under itself (halfway) to store taller items? I believe there is already the flip up shelf on the top left - correct?

Also, I am confused about the platinum finish and the stainless steel finish - can you tell me the pros/cons of each and how they are different? Which one is darker than the other?

Thank you!

answer 1
The RFG298AARS does indeed come with a retractable ("breakaway") shelf in addition to the flip-up shelf on the upper left next to the icemaker. The location of the retractable shelf is up to you - it can be set up on either the right or left side. Some customers prefer to place it on the left side under the flip-up shelf so they can store really tall items by "retracting" one shelf and "flipping up" the other.

There are several differences between real Stainless Steel and Samsung's Stainless Platinum. The key difference that many people note is that real Stainless is usually not magnetic, so if you like to hang photos and kids' artwork on your refrigerator, you might want to choose the Stainless Platinum because it is magnetic. Also, Stainless Platinum is fingerprint-resistant and very easy to care for. I wouldn't characterize one as being "darker" than the other; the difference is more in the sheen. Stainless Steel has the shiny-ness that is unique to real metal. Even if your local Lowes does not have the RFG298 available to see, they may very well have other French Door models displayed in real Stainless and Stainless Platinum, so you could see the difference for yourself.

Question

Accuracy of Net Depth

I am considering buying this refrigerator on monday and while at the store I measured the depth manually from back of unit to front of door to be about 31 inches not 33 as stated on this site. Do you add 2 inches to account for the required 2 inch space for air flow? Just wondering exactly how you come up with that number as I was unable to see the back of unit to examine if there was anything protruding from the unit adding extra inches like the plug etc.

The RFG298AARS measures 33" deep from the back of the case to the front of the doors at their widest point. With the handles, the unit is 35-5/8" at the widest point; without the doors, the depth of the case alone is 29-1/8". These dimensions do not take into account the clearance recommended for air circulation upon installation, nor the extra clearance you may need to fit through your doorway for the power cord and water lines attached to the back of the refrigerator.

I'm sorry to hear you're having this issue. While Samsung does not publish decibel ratings for its refrigerators, I would suggest visiting the FAQ and Troubleshooting sections of this website to learn more about "normal" vs. "abnormal" refrigerator noises and what causes them. For example, leveling the refrigerator can sometimes be very effective in improving the quietness.

Thank you for the question. The doors on your RFG298AARS should not stay open if they are within the radius of the "Cool Tight" door mechanism, which should automatically pull the door closed if it's open only a few inches. If your door is open more than that and it is not staying open, then it may not have been leveled properly. Please refer to page 15 of the User Guide for instructions on adjusting the height, using a carpenter's level to determine when the refrigerator is level both right to left and front to back. If doing so causes the doors to be uneven, then you can use the fasteners that came with the refrigerator to adjust the door height (see page 16).

I'm sorry to hear you're having this issue. It can take up to 24 hours for the refrigerator and freezer to reach their set temperature, and the amount of time it takes is influenced by the difference between the set temperature and room temperature, as well as factors like humidity, the amount of air circulation around the sides, top and rear of the unit, and how frequently the door is opened during the cooling process.

Please check to make sure there are no packages blocking the air vents in the freezer. If, after 24 hours has passed, the freezer has not cooled sufficiently, please please submit an online service request through the link below, or call 800-SAMSUNG to speak with an agent who can assist you further.

Great question! Samsung's "RFG" and "RSG" series refrigerators use a new, state-of-the-art insulation, as well as smaller components in the sealed system, to allow for more capacity within the same dimensions as other refrigerators. Best of all, Samsung accomplishes this without compromising the effectiveness of our Twin Cooling system - in fact we improved on it with these new models - and without compromising on efficiency.

Question

What is the freezer storage capacity on the RFG298 (with second ice maker) vs the RFG297 without it?

I can't decide between these two models. How much storage capacity will I lose in the freezer if I opt for the RFG298 over the RFG297. The second ice maker is not as valuable to me as extra storage capacity.

Actually, the measurable freezer storage capacity is the same at 8.8 cubic feet in both the RFG297 and RFG298, since the icemaker itself is recessed into the space above the ice storage bin. If the bin is not being used to store ice, it could be removed or used to store other items. The icemakers can also be turned off when not being used, so if you do choose to go with the RFG298, you would have the option of disabling the icemaker when you don't need it and turning it on if you do.

The lower icemaker in the RFG298AARS relies on a mechanical lever arm which "knows" when to turn the icemaker off when it is pushed up by the ice piling up beneath it. If you manually move the ice around in the bucket so it doesn't pile up in a particular place, or transfer the ice to another container, you will cause the icemaker to continue to harvest ice.

If the display on your RFG298AARS reads "OF", this is an indication that it is in "Cooling Off" or "Demo" mode (see page 22 of the User Manual). To disable this mode and turn the cooling system on, press the Energy Saver and Freezer buttons simultaneously and hold for about 3 seconds until a chime is heard. Numeric temperatures should be displayed for both the refrigerator and freezer. Please refer to the User Manual for instructions on setting the temperature of each compartment.

Question

Can you stop the Ice Maker from dripping water?

I'm not exactly sure where the issue comes from, but I have a couple of ideas. The first is that small pieces of ice get stuck on the way down through the door. Then since the door is not cold enough to keep water solid it melts. Meaning next time I go to get ice/water a small amount water falls from the opening.

The other idea my wife suggested was it could be condensate from the temperature change of the ice maker compartment and the refrigerated door.

It's not a lot of water, but I have to empty my overflowing drip tray about once a day. It's getting kind of annoying.

I'm sorry to hear you're having this issue. You and your wife could both be correct, since there are a variety of issues that could cause the dispenser to drip. Ice fragments remaining in the chute and melting, especially when crushed ice is selected, is a very common cause, and could be remedied by wiping the chute out after use. I would also suggest checking that the seal between the chute and the icebucket above it is fairly secure when the left door is closed. You can check this by closing the left door, and looking inside through the right side to see if there are any gaps in the seal. If so, you can try adjusting the door height using the fastener rings that came with your refrigerator (see page 16 of the User Manual, which can be downloaded as a pdf file for your convenience).

Another cause of the leak could be air in the water line. If you recently installed the refrigerator or replaced the water filter, be sure to flush several gallons of water through the line to ensure there is no air in the line. Also, be sure the filter is installed properly and turned all the way so it's locked in place. An improperly installed water filter can also lead to leaking.

If after checking all of these possible causes you continue to have this issue, please contact Samsung for service by submitting a request through the link below or calling 800-SAMSUNG to speak with an agent who can assist you further.

I'm sorry to hear about the scratches on the sides of your RFG298AARS. Unfortunately, Samsung does not have touch-up paint available. I would suggest checking with your local hardware or home improvement store for suggestions.

Thank you,
