The RFG297AAPN produces 7-1/2 lbs of half-moon shaped cubes (approximately 216 cubes) per day.

Samsung is continually making improvements on its products, however consumer education is also very important. To ensure customers are getting the most out of the RFG297 and other products, Samsung frequently updates the FAQs and Troubleshooting tips on this website to complement the support available through the agents at the Call Center and the information printed in the User Manual. There are some very useful articles available through these online resources which not only help to resolve issues once they occur, but also assist in setting realistic expectations of what to expect from features like the icemaker. Samsung's generous warranty (details of which can be found in the User Manual pdf on this website) is there to support customers who do have issues during the allotted timeframe.

Finally, please keep in mind that Samsung is committed to our customer's satisfaction, as indicated by our five-year legacy of the JD Power & Associates Overall Customer Satisfaction Award for Refrigerators.

Question

Icemaker making knocking noise

We actually have the black model, but this has happened ever since we got this refrigerator nearly 2 years ago. At first it would only last about 5 or 6 knocks, but more recently it goes on for nearly 10 minutes...it's very annoying. I did not realize this was a problem, but as I've done some research I'm finding that I'm not alone with this problem. I'm sure my unit is no longer under warranty, and I'm finding the primary answer to be to replace the icemaker...however my question is will this fix the problem? I have to say I'm not all that satisfied either with the cooling of this unit. It just seems that things do not get very cold. I've checked the settings and believe they are all properly set, but when I, for instance, pour milk on a bowl of cereal, it's just not very cold. Between that and the icemaker problem, I'm pretty disappointed in this refrigerator. If there are fixes for these things, please let me know what they are.

I'm sorry to hear you're having these issues with your RFG297AAPN. It is difficult to diagnose exactly what is causing both the knocking and the cooling issues with your refrigerator based on your description, however, I would suggest you start by checking the following:

- Does the knocking sound occur when you're operating the ice dispenser? If so, it may be related to the auger turning inside the bucket which helps to move the ice forward to drop down the chute into your glass. I would suggest checking to see there is nothing blocking the auger, such as a clump of ice which may need to be removed manually.
- If the knocking sound occurs at other times, it could be related to the ice dropping into the bucket, especially if the bucket is nearly empty. It is normal for solid ice dropping into an empty plastic bucket to make more noise than ice dropping a shorter distance onto other ice cubes.
- If the refrigerator is not hooked up to a water supply, then the knocking is probably caused by the icemaker trying unsuccessfully to draw water through the line. This can be rectified by disabling the icemaking feature - simply press Ice Off on the control panel.
- Some noises can be minimized or eliminated by leveling the refrigerator properly. Please click on this link for the FAQ article describing the various noises a refrigerator might make, and what causes them: http://ars.samsung.com/customer/usa...
- The RFG297, like other Samsung refrigerators, uses multiple air vents to help maintain consistent temperatures throughout the refrigerator compartment. I would suggest checking for blockage of the air vents and moving any items that are blocking these vents.
- Samsung recommends setting the refrigerator temperature at 38°F, and leaving a minimum of 1" on each side and 2" above and behind the unit for air flow so the cooling system will work properly and most efficiently.
- If the door is opened frequently during warmer months, or if you've just loaded food into the refrigerator after shopping, you may want to use the Power Cool option on the control panel. This feature turns the compressor on so it runs continuously, effectively dropping the temperature to the desired level in a shorter period of time.

If the above suggestions do not resolve your issues, I would suggest reviewing the FAQ and Troubleshooting sections on this website for additional suggestions. If the problems persist, you may want to contact 800-SAMSUNG to discuss service options with an agent who will be happy to assist you. Samsung strives for - and continues to achieve - a high level of customer satisfaction with our refrigerators. I hope we're able to help increase your level of satisfaction, as well.

Question

I have had my new Samsung RFG297AAPN refrigerator for approximately 3 hours and it has not cooled one degree. Is this normal?

I would think it would be on the right track by cooling. The customer service person has told me to wait 2 more hours to see if there is any change. I did realize that the power freeze and the power cool options were not activated. However, after 20 minutes with those features activated, the temperature has still not dropped by even one degree. Any thoughts from anyone?

It can take up to 24 hours for the refrigerator and freezer to cool to the set temperature. Please check the display on the refrigerator; if it has the letters "OF" displayed, the refrigerator is in "cooling off" mode which can be deactivated by pressing the Energy Saver and Freezer buttons simultaneously for at least 3 seconds until a chime sounds and the "OF" changes to numeric temperatures. The compressor should then turn on in about 5 minutes.

When do the new models launch?

I have read many reviews about your French Door 29 cu.ft. unit. One of the hesitations that I have is alot of consumers have mentioned how noisy your ice maker is. Do you have any improvements on the way? If so....when?

There is no information available on new models at this time. However, I would like to try to address your concerns about the icemaker in an effort to put these claims in perspective. There is a certain amount of noise that is considered normal, such as ice cubes dropping into the bucket and the water valve being energized during the ice cube tray fill process. Some other noises made by the refrigerator can be corrected by adjusting the leveling legs, for example. Please refer to the User Manual, which can be downloaded directly from Samsung.com, for complete set up instructions to make your experience a positive one.

Question

How long to fill a cup of water?

We recently pirchased a new 297aapn and had it hooked up by a plumber. The unit is making ice but when I go to get a cup of water, it is extremely slow. In fact it will usually time out after about 4 oz of water and the water will stop coming out all together until I repress the button. Do you think there is a problem with the filter or will this get better in a few days

Under normal conditions, a 170cc (5.75 oz.) cup should fill in about 10 seconds from the water dispenser of the RFG297. This assumes the recommended household water pressure of 20~125 psi is available.

If your water is running very slowly, then I would suggest checking to see if the filter is installed correctly, functioning/not clogged, and that there is no air in the lines. It may be necessary to dispense as much as 6 gallons of water after initial installation to ensure the lines have been fully cleared, so you might want to rule out problems with the filter first. To determine whether the filter is effecting the water flow, simply remove the filter and try dispensing some water. If water dispenses more rapidly without the filter installed, then you may need to replace the filter.

There are several factors that can effect the ability of an icemaker to produce ice, including water supply, freezer and refrigerator temperatures, and control panel functions. Please check the following to try to resolve the issue:
- Is the water connected, the valve turned on and hoses unkinked and free of obstruction?
- Is your home's water pressure between 20~125 psi? Under normal conditions, a 5.75 oz. glass can be filled in about 10 seconds.
- Is the refrigerator set at the recommended 38°F? If the refrigerator is too cold, the water lines could freeze.
- Is the freezer temperature cold enough? Samsung recommends setting the freezer at -2°F.
- Is the icemaker turned off? Make sure the Ice Off icon is not illuminated on the display.
- Is the feeler arm under the icemaker stuck in the "up" position, which would signal to the icemaker that the bucket is full and to stop making ice.
- Is the control panel locked, which would prevent the dispenser from operating?
- Is the water filter installed properly and locked in place?
- Did you bleed the air from the lines by dispensing 5-6 gallons of water from the dispenser since installing or replacing the filter?
- Did you press the Test button on the icemaker to reset it?

If none of the above suggestions helps to resolve the issue, and the ice tray does not fill with water, try removing the water filter temporarily and press the test button on the icemaker again. If the tray fills without a filter installed, then the cartridge is likely clogged or partially clogged and should be replaced. The filter should be replaced about every 6 months based on average usage, but it could become clogged sooner if there are a lot of impurities in the water supply.

If, after checking each of these suggestions, the icemaker still isn't functioning properly, please submit an online service request through the link below, or call 800-SAMSUNG to speak with an agent who can assist you.

The RFG297AAPN does have wheels that enable it to be moved forward or back, but not sideways. Please check to make sure the front leveling legs have not been lowered which would prevent you from being able to move it at all. The leveling legs can be raised by turning them with a flathead screwdriver inserted between the grooves of the leg.

Both the RFG297 and RFG298 are currently available; one does not replace the other. The RFG297 has a single icemaker in the refrigerator which dispenses ice through the door, while the RFG298 has our "Dual Ice" feature, with the addition of a second icemaker in the freezer. This is great for customers who do a lot of entertaining, and those who simply prefer to have extra ice available.

Samsung's "Platinum" and "Stainless Platinum" are the same color, which is a fingerprint-resistant finish that resembles real stainless, but is not an exact match. Some customers prefer to have the Platinum finish on their refrigerators because it's easier to keep clean, and is magnetic, so can be used to display photos and kids' artwork.

Thank you for the question. The ice bucket in your RFG297 can be removed and rinsed in warm water if necessary, but you should not need to clean the icemaker itself since the water that regularly runs through it is filtered. If you are having an issue that requires further assistance, please resubmit with a more detailed explanation, or feel free to call 800-SAMSUNG to speak with an agent who will be happy to help.

Question

How long should it take for the freezer to freeze a bottle of water once it is turned on?

Our new refridgerator was delivered today and turned on (taken out of demo mode) at 4PM. I placed a bottle of water in the freezer at 5PM and it not frozen at 9PM. The refridgerator compartment is cooling fine but the freezer doesn't seem to be getting down to temp even with the power freeze function on.

It can take up to 24 hours for the refrigerator and freezer compartments to reach their set temperature, depending on the difference between the starting and set temperatures, humidity level, amount and temperature of items placed inside and frequency of the door being open. I can't tell you how long it would take for a bottle of water to freeze since the size and shape of the container would significantly effect that, but I can tell you that the icemaker would not be able to start effectively producing ice until the temperature dropped below zero. (Samsung recommends setting the refrigerator and freezer compartments to 38°F and -2°F, respectively.) If, after 24 hours, your refrigerator is cooling sufficiently but the freezer is not, then it may require service. If this is the case, please call 800-SAMSUNG to speak with an agent who will be happy to assist you further.
