Though it should not damage the refrigerator to have the icemaker turned on without being connected to water, you may hear noises which could be prevented by turning the icemaker off. Simply press the Ice Off button on the control panel until the corresponding upper or lower Ice Off icon is illuminated.
Both icemakers have a plastic "arm" that hangs over the bucket and is raised by the ice as it piles up in the bucket. Once the ice is high enough to push against this arm, the icemaker turns off until ice is used and the arm drops back down.
