Customer questions and answers for samsung 58" Class 550 Series 1080p Plasma HDTV

Question

How do you stop the screen from shifting due to changes in signal resolution?

I have Cablevision. When I am watching a channel with the resolution at 1920x1080 (HD channel), and I change the channel with a non 1920x1080 signal input, the picture shifts to the right and the entire picture does not fit within the viewing area. What is causing this? How do you stop the screen from shifting due to changes in signal resolution?

Although this is more of an issue with the way the service provider sends the signal, and easy fix for this is to turn off the TV when the shift happens, then turn it back on. This should automatically fix the difference in resolution and recenter the image.

I have the same issue and fixed the problem by setting my box to only produce 720P or 1080i. I don't understand the answer that Samsung indicates it is an box problem, since this happens on some Samsung TVs and not others with the same cable box.

I battled this problem all of last summer. The model of my Samsung Plasma TV is PN58C550G1F.
I have a link to a Youtube Video of the problem.
If this is what your TV is doing. Here is how I fixed mine. I have Time Warner Cable. The cable box is a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 4250 HDC. For me this problem only appeared when I was using a HDMI cable.
1. Open the access menu of the cable box
2. Look at the menu then scroll to settings when highlighted press enter
3. Look down to the bottom of the new menu quick settings should be highlighted
4. Arrow to the right till Display is highlighted you should see a menu of settings
5. Arrow up to OUTPUT RESOLUTION press enter to access the changes menu
6. Make sure that only 1080i is checked this is the only setting you use
7. Arrow back till you are at the Display menu again
8. Arrow up till ASPECT RATIO is highlighted press enter to access the changes menu
9. Make sure that only the 16 x 9 ratio is highlighted you don't use any other setting
10. Make sure of the settings
11. This should fix your problem. I don't know about cable company's but the boxes should work along the same lines as mine does.
12. GOOD LUCK I hope this will help you.

This problem happened to me after the cable company "upgraded the firmware" on the Scientific Atlanta cable box. I had to go into advanced settings on the cable box and deselect everything but 1080i. I also had the option to change the sidebars to black when watching a program in 480. I have had no problems since doing this.

The ethernet port is mainly used for media streaming from your home network and PC though the AllShare DLNA feature on the TV. You will be able to share and view Movie, MP3 and Jpeg files you have saved on your home network though the TV.

Question

Repair for Blue ghosting/streaks on white background.

I had the unit repaired just over 1 year ago for a blue/purple ghosting which appears on white background. The service rep. took photos and after sending to Samsung engineers, the solution was to replace the panel. Now just over 12 months later the identical problem has returned. The original repair clearly did not fix the problem as the identical problem has returned with in a short period of time. Can I get this repaired under warranty as the original defect has not been fixed. Image attached showing a mild example - the more superior and the whiter the background - the more intense the streaks appear. The problems seems to get worse by the week. This unit is not even 2 years old. please help. Thanks.

I’m sorry you are having an issue with your device. Although with the information you have provided I do not have a solution for you (the USB drive should automatically be recognized by the TV. However, the USB drive needs to be formatted in a FAT file system in order for the TV to recognize it); I will say that if you make a service request at http://www.samsung.com/us/support/o..., or contact 800-SAMSUNG, the service department should be able to provide you with a live solution.

Unfortunately, none of the Samsung TVs over 22" will offer a dedicated headphone jack. However, there is still a way to connect headphones to the larger units. In order to do so, you would need to connect the headphones via a 3.5mm connector cable (male to female) to the audio outputs on the TV. Even then, since the audio outputs on this unit are a fixed pass through type of connection, you would need some sort of intermediary device to control the volume, since the TV does not have control of the volume coming out of the analogue and digital audio outputs.

It would be preferable (and to be on the safe side) to change out the power cord since the newer TV may have a slightly different power requirement or prong setup.

All Samsung Plasma TVs offer a technology called 600Hz subfield motion. Basically for the 600Hz sub-field motion, the television shows you the image at the same refresh rate (60Hz) but flashes the individual pixels faster so the images appear smoother then on a regular 60Hz panel. In this case it flashes the pixels 10 times faster then normal. So 60 fps x 10 sub-field = 600 flashes of the pixels per second. This makes the images seem much smoother on the screen but it does not increase the actual frames per second. It is not exactly the same as the Hz on the LCD/LED Samsung TVs (which ultimately raise the frame rates of the images, giving you a "Hyper-Real" image) and can not be toggled on or off since it is always on. The reason you are seeing the 60Hz in the info box is because the info box only displays the signal’s actual Hz and screen resolution and not the info of the picture on the screen after the TV processes it. Meaning that the 60Hz you are seeing is the signals actual Hz and not the screen’s Hz. Currently there is no way to display the screen’s Hz in the info box. Coincidentally, the Samsung TVs can only accept a 60Hz signal and there are currently no consumer devices on the market that will transmit at over 60Hz (excluding some PCs).

Dish network does not broadcast in 1080p, except for a few higher priced movie rentals. All cable and satellite High Definition programming is either broadcast in 720P or 1080i. If you want to see 1080p on your tv you will have to watch a blu ray or rent a 1080p movie from dish.

HDMI is all you need so it appears you are set up correctly.

Although this model does not have direct access to Samsung Apps (like Netflix, Pandora or YouTube), it can access App content through a 2010 Samsung BD player (the blu-ray player will handle the Internet content processing. Hulu+ is only available on the 2010 3D Blu-Ray Players at this time).

You were probably thinking since you got a 600 hz Plasma TV, it was going to be more responsive. Problem is, the cable or satellite company broadcasts at 60hz. I found this to be more pronounced with the display set to Dynamic. Changing to Standard or Movie smooths the edges. That's about all you can do.

Question

I get a faint purple horizontal bar partially across the screen in scenes that are nearly white. Is this an issue with the tv or just the settings?

The problem is most notable during commercials with lots of white background but also appears frequently during sky shots when watching golf. Is there a fix for this or is my tv broken.
