Question

I have a NP 900X3A. Which SDHC cards are supported by the cardreader

One can already buy a 32 Gb SDHC 10 card, but the reading capacity of the cardreader in the laptop is not mentioned. It is also not specified in the manuals I consulted. As there are cards of 2, 4, 6 and 10 Mb/sec, is would be foolish to buy an expensive card that cannot be used at full capacy.
Thank you.

I tested Class 2, 4 and 10 cards in the NP900X3A. The performance does get much better. I highly recommend using the Class 10 cards.

If you are using the np900x3a-a03us the machine does not have a TPM chip, and therefore requires the use of a USB flash drive to hold the encryption key. Problem is that the NP900x3a (or some models of it, because some have a TPM chip) has a problem enumerating USB devices across a REBOOT (note the word RE-boot). The normal bitlocker setup with a flash drive will go through a test in which it attempts to make sure that everything it needs in order to manage the drive encrypted (including a flash drive from which it can read the encryption key) is in place. To do this, it will perform a warm reboot of machine. At that point you get a message saying that the USB device that holds the encryption key could not be found, and you will get into a loop if you continue to reboot, where you will get the message, reboot, get the message, reboot, etc. and on and on.

The solution (which I got from microsoft) is to tell the dialog that you will reboot later (I'm sorry, since it is now working I don't have screen shots) and then shut the machine down (to a powered-off state).

Then power up the device and let it boot with the USB device (including the encryption key) inserted into the USB port, and everything will be fine the encryption process will proceed, asking you all of the usual questions.

I got this solution after opening a ticket with Microsoft, at which time they described this as "a known problem" with this machine (by "known problem" they implied "known to Samsung"). I still have a ticket open with them because it means that you can never do a warm reboot with an encrypted boot drive, you ALWAYS have to do a cold boot. This is quite inconvenient, but it does work.

My employer requires all mobile devices to have encrypted hard drives, so I had to find a way to make this work. This is the only method that I could find. It was either use this, or return the machine to the store (after I had already upgraded it to Windows 7 Ultimate in order to be able to use bitlocker). THere are other posts avaialble to show the usual process for encrypting a hard-drive with a USB device and bitlocker, this post merely addresses the problem relative to having to do cold boots instead of warm reboots.

Thank you for contacting Samsung.

Since there are several different iterations of the NP900X3A, we recommend you visit the following website and select Laptops under the Office column and then select the appropriate model from the drop-down list based on what best matches the model number specified on what is printed on the underside of your laptop.

Thank you for contacting Samsung.

We recommend you invest in a universal electrical adapter. This will allow you to connect any existing US electrical cords or adapters to the electrical standard in whichever country you are in, or wherever else you may travel around the world in the future. We cannot recommend any specific product, but you're better off spending the money on a universal adapter instead a special adapter just for your notebook computer itself. That way, you can plug in additional electronics and continue to use them as well while you travel.

It really does not support wireless N. After a lot of trying, searching and digging through specs at the machine code level, we finally determined (my computer engineer husband and I) that it's really only set up for b/g. Perhaps in the next version we'll actually get N.

Open the mouse settings in the control panel. Click on Device Settings. There is a check box to disable the touch pad if an external mouse is plugged in. See if that box is checked.

You can find instructions for upgrading the memory in the User’s Guide. To access the User’s Guide click Start > All Programs > Samsung > User’s Guide.

Important: Upgrading the memory on the X360 or 9 Series Laptops voids the warranty, because you must open the notebook to access the memory.

Question

Is using hyperthreading harmful?

Due to the processor speed of my NP900X3A is only about 1.4Ghz x2, I've previously disabled and then enabled hyperthreading frequently to meet system requirement of some games. Would it be harmful to my processors if I keep enabling and disabling HT frequently like that?
And one more question. Is using hyperthreading alone considered harmful itself?

Thank you for contacting Samsung.

If hyperthreading were harmful, we don't believe Intel would have built it into their processor options. As long as you haven't noticed any unusual performance issues as a result of enabling/disabling the feature, you have nothing to worry about.

Question

Why does Bluetooth fail after waking up from sleep n Windows 8?

I recently installed Windows 8 Release Preview on my NP900X3A. I got all of the drivers installed and everything works nearly perfectly, except for Bluetooth. If I "sleep" the computer by closing the lid, Bluetooth is not available after waking up. It usually takes a couple of shutdown/restart cycles to get it back.

Has anyone else seen this behavior and have any ideas about fixing it?

It works only when you actually click the touchpad by pushing (until you hear the click sound) - at least in my case.

If it still doesn't work, try installing newer version of the driver (2.7.0) from http://www.samsung.com/us/support/downloads/notebooks/NP900X3A-B01US

Question

AC Jack Pin Too Far Back to Make Connection

Hello! My Samsung 900X has been working fine. Then this morning, I noticed the AC adapter cable was falling out of the AC jack/plug. I tried both of my AC Adapters and the problem continued.
Peering into the plug, it appears the pin is suddenly too far back to make a connection.
Needless to say, my battery is now dead because I cannot charge.

1 - this is a hardware problem so I'm not sure what to do
2 - the machine is out of warranty, but apparently Samsung doesn't have any authorized service centers near San Francisco

Suggestions on my next steps? I need, amongst other things, some files on this computer, if not the actual computer.

Thank you!

Question

How do I connect my Series 9 laptop to a monitor and/or TV

I have a Series 9 laptop and would like to set it up with a monitor in my office (either VGA or DVI, the monitor does both), but I do not know the appropriate cable to purchase to make it happen.

Also, I have a Samsung TV (UN46D6300) and would love to connect to it as well. Can I use WiDi for this? And if not, what cable would I need in order to connect to the HDMI port on the TV?

I happen to also have a Samsung 3D (although I clearly don't have anything to play 3D on) Blu-Ray player, in case that helps get the laptop on to the TV...
