Customer questions and answers for samsung NP-R540I
Question
How do I stop the cursor from jumping and corrupting the text while typing?
I really love my R540 and this is my second Samsung laptop - however - the jumping cursor is making it almost impossible to use my laptop for wordprocessing which is my main application. I've disabled the various features, then tried totally disabling Elan...but nothing seems to work. Now I type with my palms raised at an awkward, uncomfortable angle to keep from contacting the trackpad. Using a mouse might work I guess if I could disable the trackpad but that defeats the purpose of using it on my lap! Any help would be much appreciated.

I have gone into the mouse settings and followed that procedure but it didn't work for me. In the end, to completely rid of the touch pad, you have to go into the bios and disable the touch pad.
This is my only solution since I don't mind using my wireless mouse:
Reboot comp > press F2 before the computer loads (just tap away at it) > use keyboard to go in Advanced tab > Disable touch pad by pressing enter on Enabled to Disabled > Press F10 to save and Exit.
Follow the same steps to Enable it again if you find a better solution. :)

I researched the jumping cursor problem that many laptop owners were experiencing (me included) and I discovered a free utility called TOUCHFREEZE which totally stops my cursor from moving while I'm typing. This solved the problem which I previously posted here! The key is to freeze the touchpad while typing and that's what this utility does.
You can find this on the Internet and it worked like a charm. I downloaded it and ran it and now at this moment I'm typing on my Samsung R540 and there is no problem with the jumping cursor, unintended scrolling or any other touchpad problems! So my problem is solved and I'm happy to share this with other Samsung laptop owners who may be having similar problems.
I can't find an ac adapter for my R540-JA06US Laptop
I can't find any "autentic" samsung at local retailers, best buy, comp usa etc., so I got a universal, none of the tips fit, then I ended up ordering from a website, as Samsung website does not offer one for this laptop, not any even w/60 W....now the one I have will charge it, but it just falls out of the socket..obviously not the correct "fit"...where can I get this AC adapter, the one that came w/my laptop says Lite On Technologies, in the box it came...it does not read Samsung on it !!

Hi, sunshine12
I did a quick search for you (I bought a N540-J08US a few months ago) and came up with the following partnumber: AA-PA1N90W
Try searching the support section of Samung's website for that part number. If links are allowed here, try to go to: http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/AA-PA1N90W/US. I've included a screen shot if it helps

Hi, jman55,
What machine do you have? I have the NP-R540-JA08US and unfortunately this machine cannot accomodate a new graphics card. It only has 3 USB ports, HDMI port, SD card slot and VGA, out.
You cannot access the PCI (e.g, there's no ExpressCard slot), and I don't see an ESATA port on my machine.
I does have 1 SATA port internally that is connected to the HDD. It's not hard to get to.

Hi, cometq,
Not sure if this will work, but you can give it a try: Go into Windows Update (Start -> All Programs ->Windows Update). Then click "Change Settings" on the right hand side. Under Who Can Install Updates, you will find an option called "Allow all users to install updates on this computer". Try changing that option and see what happens.

I have this machine and like. Other than a quirky touchpad, the machine gives me no problems.
For techincal specs: 1) goto Samsung's homepage and click Support at the top 2) In the "Find your product" box type in NP-R540-JA08. 3) Under quick links click "Features and specifications"

Hello, Ogau,
To temporarily disable the touch pad when using a mouse, you do one of two things:
Solution #1 - Hold down the FN key and press F10. Use this key comb again to turn the touchpad back on.
Solution #2 - Click Start, type in "Mouse". When the mouse option box shows up, click the ELAN tab. You will find an option called "Disable when external USB mouse plug in" in the middle of the box.

Hello, Matt1987,
Do you have the Samsung Easy Display Manager software installed? I had to install this software in order for several keys to work. You should be able to find the software under Support on Samsung's website.
How do I stop my cursor from jumping all over the screen while typing?
I have a new laptop. No matter what program I'm in, the cursor jumps all over the place. I look up and have to find the cursor, delete what typed in the wrong place and retype where it belongs. It happens all the time. Microsoft forum says it's the touchpad and to disable. Is that really the solution?

Hi, Chriswar,
I've had my R540 for a few months now and noticed that the HDD/ODD light only flashes when there is hard drive activity. It is supposed to blink. However it is not supposed to blink when the computer is asleep.
My daughter got a hijack virus I wasn't able to overcome. All data was backed-up so I used the system reset disk. Everything seems ok now but I am unable to get the wireless up and running.

Hi, ibhef,
What model computer are you using? Are you using Windows 7? I have the NP-R540-JA08 notebook and use the FN+F9 key combination to turn the wireless on and off. Try that key combination. If that doesn't work, check to see if you have the Samsung Easy Display Manager installed (it seems to manage the special key cominations). If it is not installed, you may have to download and install it from Samsung's website.

Hi, Kathvu626,
What machine do you have? I have the NP-R540-JA08US and here's how I activate scrolling on my machine:
1) Right click the desktop and select Personalize. 2) Select Change Mouse Pointers on the left. 3) Click the ELAN tab. 4) Click Options 5) Scroll down until you see the Scrolling option and click it. 6) Then select vertical or horizontal scrolling (whichever you like)
If you are using a mousepad other than ELAN (such as Synaptic) the procedure for getting to the scrolling option is mostly the same.
What computer are you using? If you are using the N540 and running Windows 7 try this: 1) Right click the desktop and select Personalize 2) Next select Change Mouse Pointers on the right 3) Select the Elan tab and click Options 4) Scroll down to Palm Tracking and move the slider to the left to make the touchpad more sensitive.
I updated my computer to windows 7 ultimate and lost the built in webcam in the process. Can you please tell me the name of the manufacturer?
Any other information would be helpful. Thanks.

Hi, Shane35,
What computer model are you using? I have the Samsung N540-J08US and my built in webcam is called WebCam SCB-0350M in Device Manager. A Google search should reveal the manufactuer.
You could also go into Device Manager and see if the webcam is listed (under imaging devices). If it is, right-click on it and select "Update Driver". Windows 7 should reinstall the driver automatically.
Upgrading the processor would most likely require that you replace the motherboard, which means you would completely void your product warranty and we would be unable to further support your product.
