Question

SSD Magician software won't run

Samsung SSD Magician software crashes about 5 seconds after opening. Tried installing from CD, installing from web download, uninstalling, reinstalling. Always with the same result.

Error message (always the same):
"Samsung SSD Magician Application has stopped working
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

Question

Does Samsung 830 Series SSD support TRIM on OS X Lion natively?

Will OS X Lion recognised Samsung 830 Series SSD as supported SSD, therefore, enable TRIM support natively, without enabling TRIM unofficially via TRIM enabler or other hack.

Like you, I am a new owner of the 512GB Samsung 830 SSD, this is what I found after some research:

A. SOLUTION: (but not practical), remove your SSD from Mac and connect it to a Windows system and use the supplied Magician Software V3.0 to update your firmware.

B. Creating a Bootable USB for firmware under Magician Software, DOES NOT WORK for Mac.
1. Mac cannot boot the resultant Bootable USB (works only in PC environment)
2. For the more adventurous, using rEFIT or the like it does not work either
(Mac resets the USB in the booting process, that caused the USB to be disconnected)
3. If SSD is not detected by Magician 3 in Windows system
- firmware cannot be downloaded
- bootable USB cannot be created
(so, go back to A)

C. More of us, should FEEDBACK to Samsung to provide us a bootable CD ISO download to flash Samsung SSD firmware. This is what all the rest of the other vendors do, or better still provide a firmware update apps for Mac users like some of the other vendors.

Question

updating firmware...

Here is another request that you to make it easy to update the firmware from a Mac... From the forums it is clear that there are multiple thousands of people around the world using the Samsung 830, and it has a very good reputation in the Mac community... If you check out the forums (Apple, MacRumors, etc) you'll notice that the one reason people go away from the Samsung is because one needs to upgrade it through a windows system...

I've gone this way anyway partly because of its reputation, and partly because I believe your business will eventually come to its senses in this way, hopefully soon... It obviously makes good business sense, it confirms your ideas about "community," and it is probably easy enough for your programers to move the code over...

So, that is my three cents...

John.

No. A laptop that old will very likely only come with a SATA II 3.0gps controller. To achieve the 830 series speeds, a SATA III 6.0gps controller is required. If you were to install this drive into your machine, it would only perform at the rate of a SATA II SSD.
Samsung offers the 520 series SSD, which will show you the same results at a lower cost.

Question

How do I get my SSD back to a factory setting if the Magician Tool can't see it?

I formatted my Samsung SSD 830 series drive on a Mac (with writing zeros), now when I mount the drive as an external on a PC it shows up as an internal harddrive. When I try to eject it I get a message saying that the drive is in use by another program. The Samsung Magician tool is unable to see the recognize the drive as a SSD. What can I do to fix this?

Question

How do I know that Garbage Collection (GC) is working, what can I do to facilitate that?

I am a happy owner of the 512GB SSD for my MacBookPro 17" (early 2011) with 8GB RAM under OS X Lion.

I understand that GC works during system idle time; so if the system is not idle for long enough no GC gets done?

Practical suggestion would be appreciated:
- Should I start up my Mac and leave it on the login screen and make sure my system do not go to sleep for half an hour a day (?).
- Would tools like istatmenu monitoring disk activities on a per second basis or SMARTReporter checking every 60 seconds inhibits the GC process.
- How does GC knows that a file is deleted if TRIM is not enabled for OS X Lion users.

Using the latest Magician software, the drive selector (for either USB drive or CD/DVD) lets me select the device, but the OK and Cancel buttons don't work. My SSD currently has Level 1 software; I am trying to update to Level 3.
