Questions & Answers for samsung 128GB 470 Series Solid State Drive

Question

128 gb ssd for mac

I purchased a 90gb SSD from another manufacturer for my iMac that worked extremely well -and this was even from a outside box on a USB port - it was amazing ... in fact so amazing that i decided to take it back and upgrade it to 128. I got the samsung which has always had a good name to me,but for some reason i am getting very slow performance with it, about the same as my hard drive.

i just stuck the drive into the imac and cloned my root drive to it.

question is, is there any way to test it or congfigure it on a mac, or trouble shoot what might be wrong here. I am sure it has to be a configuration problem because any ssd should be super fact compared to a disk drive ...

thank you.

This is happening because the apple os isn't correctly responding to the ssd. Apple os is the least ssd friendly os. It could be missing driver and ect. The os also doesn't support trim. Windows 7 in the only one at this time that has trim enabled. The problem isn't with the ssd it's with the os. Try asking apple for help or get windows 7.

Question

Samsung SSD Magician w/ RAID.

My original goal was to install 2x 470 Series SSD's in raid 0 (Running that way now), and use SSD Magician to keep my SSD performance up to par (Since Raid 0 does not support Trim). Has anyone gotten this to work? I am using an x58 chipset motherboard w/ onboard Intel raid controller.

Any suggestions or success stories would be welcomed.

Check to see it the magician software 1.2 is up to date and the firmware is up to date (AXM09B1Q). The if everything is up to get and it still doesn't see it reinstall the software and if that does work it means it the hard ware of the computer like a raid card or the bios setting.

As long as the laptop has an esata drive interface, it should work. Be sure to update your system bios and to enable the ahci setting for the drive. Follow the videos in the SSD Magician software for complete information. The drive installed on my 2006 laptop without any problems.

Question

Samsung SSD Magician does not detect any SSD Brand SSD.

Does Samsung SSD Magician require an AHCI compliant motherboard to detect the harddrive?
If so, does it still perform garbage collection automatically, do I have to manually enable it and how would I do that? Or if i'm on an IDE controller, will it now begin degrading performance due to lack of TRIM and Garbage Collection?

My SSD came with a CD and the key is on the sleeve of the CD.

If there's nothing there, someone at Samsung goofed, contact them about it. But check the exact model number on the box online after you register it and see if you actually bought a model that includes a Ghost key.. Or register the drive here and view it to see if it comes with free Ghost. The model number indicates if it comes with Ghost or not. Samsung may put Ghost CD's in every box, but only ones with a serial in the models that advertise it comes with a key for Ghost

Are you sure this is a Samsung SSD? Usually Corsair SSD's are black with a white label. So the Samsung Magician isn't going to work with it. If you post the model number it would help :)

Hard to say as you didn't include if you have a desktop or laptop, or if you're plugging it into an Addon card or the controller on the mainboard. If it doesn't recognize the drive, what kind of drive controller do you have?

Also were you sure to enable AHCI in BIOS first? And if this is an expansion card for SATA III, does it detect using your onboard (but possibly slower) drive controller?

No, but the hardware to do so is cheap, or, just about every PC still has a floppy bay.

I didn't even bother with mounting hardware. The SSD is so light you can put it in and just install the screws on one side and it won't flop around at all. But if you have a clear case or really want it secured then you'll need to order 2.5>3.5 or 2.5>5.25 mounting hardware, and it's cheap.

Question

Drive not recognized in Magician with current Marvell 91xx driver

Using Windows 7 64 bit, this drive is not recognized in SSD Magician if the current Marvell 91xx driver, 1.2.0.1006 WHQL is installed. If I install an old Marvel 91xx driver from 2009, 1.0.0.1027, it is recognized.

The current driver creates an entry in the Device Manager's Storage controllers section that reads Marvell 91xx SATA 6G Controller while the old driver does not. The current driver adds SCSI at the end of the drive name in the Device Manager Disk Drives section while the old one does not.

Would someone please update the Magician software to recognize the drive when the current Marvell 91xx driver is used?

Also where can I check for the latest Magician software? I received 3.0 with my drive and when I check the following page on your web site it shows the latest is 2.0.

The Marvell 91xx chipset not a very good one and is known for tons of problems with SATA III drives.

Unless you are using SATA III drives, and the Samsung SSD isn't, there's no need to change the driver. An addon card will show up under SCSI controllers (at least they do for me in Win7 x64)

If you are stuck with this Marvell SATA chipset, I would suggest looking for a PCI-E SATA III (or SATA III/USB 3.0 combo if you don't have USB 3.0) card that has an Intel chipset if possible...or anything but Marvell, and you'll be happy with the results. They are relatively inexpensive as well.
