Question

How do I listen to my TV through my sound system?

I have a new samsung HT-D5500 and a new samsung un46d6000sf tv. I have setup both devices and they are connected with an HDMI cable. I can play a dvd and the picture shows on the tv. When I play the TV I would like to hear the sound from the sound system instead of the tv speakers. The two devices seem to see each other, but no sound comes out. Please help.

Ist run an optical Cable from TV to Blue Ray. On tv menu go to audio settings and scroll to speakers and select external speakers. Be sure to use the "Function/TV Source button on Blue ray remote and set to the "D-In" setting. Works for me and I have the same model TV and home theater.

Use an optical cable. Connect the optic cable wire from cable box to the samsung HT-D5500. Turn on the player and from the main screen press TV source "function" button on the remote, once. Then turn on the cable box. On the cable remote controller press the settings button and go to audio. Select the optical audio.

Question

Connect my cable box to my home theater's BD player or my TV?

I have the HT-D5500/ZA Blu-Ray Home theater as well as the PN51E550D1FXZA Plasma Smart TV. I had connected my 3D cable box via high speed HDMI cable to my TV previously, before buying & setting up my HT-D5500/ZA Blu-Ray Home theater.
After setting up and testing my home theater setup yesterday I noticed that all 5.1 speakers sound great when playing a DVD or Blu-ray disc via the BD player, but only the right & left front speakers are active when playing Xfinity/Comcast cable content.
Is there something I need to change in order to get all 5.1 speakers to work with my cable box? I've tried changing the audio output settings on the cable box but both settings ('TV speakers' and 'stereo') failed to make any but the right/left front speakers active.
Should I be connecting my Comcast cable box's HDMI cable directly to the HT-D5500/ZA Blu-Ray component instead of the TV in order to achieve the full 5.1 speaker sound?

Thanks.

One last thing. There is an audio option on your home theater that will allow you to simulate surround from a stereo (2-channel) signal. It's called Dolby ProLogic II. You can read more about it via the link below and on page 54 of your user manual.

Thank you for contacting Samsung.

Depending on the cable box model, there may be a setting to set the audio to Digital, but you would need to refer to a user manual, telephone tech support or the vendor's website to see if that's offered on the model you currently use. DVDs and Blu-rays are pre-mixed in 5.1 surround sound to take full advantage of the original sound mix, but a lot of TV is still broadcast in 2.0 stereo sound. If you pay extra for HDTV programming, many of the channels that are broadcast in 720p or higher quality video typically offer a 5.1 digital audio signal. As for connecting your various devices, we recommend you connect your home theater via HDMI to your TV and Optical to your Blu-ray player. You only remaining option would be to connect your cable box via the component connection on the home theater.

For additional troubleshooting, please refer to the following support article:

HI, the easiest way (and the most flexible way) to do this is to use a function built into your ht-d5500 called DLNA. Currently the d5500 has the capability of being a DLNA renderer/play-back device. DLNA is a protocol and set of instructions which allow networked media devices to work with each other in a server/client/controller arrangement. In your case your PC will be the DLNA server (ie it has the photos, videos, music etc) on it that you want to play back on your TV (using your d5500 as the playback device). Since the d5500 has a built in DLNA function, you'll only need to set up your pc for DLNA server functions. You'll need a DLNA-capable app installed and running on your PC (fortunately a windows PC already has Windows Media Player as a DLNA-capable server/client (or use a different DLNA package from a multitude of sources - some are free and some are not). Many DLNA apps are available - some free and some are not. I don't use Windows Player since it tends to be a resource hog and is not as flexible as most third-party apps. A quick trip to wikipedia (search term - DLNA) will yield a ton of info on DLNA and a comprhensive list of DLNA apps. I have used Twonky, TVersity, Mezzmo, PLay-On and several others that all function very well. It seems the "pay-for" apps are a little more refined/mature than the free ones. Choose an app that will support all your streaming requirements (photos/video/music).

Once you have your DLNA App installed on your PC and configured to your liking (ie directory structure, security features etc), make sure your d5500 and pc are operating on the same network. You can verify this by checking the "network settings" selection in "setup" on your d5500. If the network connections are up and running and your DLNA app is running on your PC, go to the "My Devices" menu selection on your d5500 and you should see the DLNA server you installed on your PC, listed as an available device along with "USB - IPOD - etc" choices. Scroll up to the DLNA server name and press OK, you should now see a choice of music, video and photo. Scroll to whichever one you want to use, press OK and you should then see a list directories (if your media is stored in subfolders) or filenames that correspond to the media files stored on your PC. Simply select the appropriate folder name (or filename) and press OK and -Voila- , you will have access to your media stored on your PC. Using the DLNA approach, you can then use a central server (your PC, a NAS, your Smart phone, A laptop or Tablet) as a server for your media files - ie any DLNA compliant device can be used. It all sounds pretty complicated but is kind of fun and rewarding getting this stuff working together. DLNA is fairly new in the home media arena but it is now becoming a huge part of virtually ALL new media appliances (Cell Phones, TV's, Game boxes, PC's, Tablets, dvd/blu-ray players and a host of other products). Hope you can use this info and enjoty all the advantages of our DLNA-enabled world.

The HT-D5500 doesn't use a tray to load the discs. You simply insert the dvd in the slot on the front panel of the device - partially insert the dvd till you feel the dvd being loaded by the motorized transport in the machine (it will then load the rest of the way on it's own). You can eject the disc using the eject-button on the front panel of the device. Your owners manual shows the location of the dvd slot and the eject button on page 15. If you don't have the owners manual or can't find it you can view and download it at this url: http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/UM/201103/20110307111729712/HT-D5500_XAA_0208_CMS.pdf

Question

Where can I find model numbers for the individual components from my HT-D5500 system?

I just bought a used system and it's missing the subwoofer and iPod Dock so I want to make sure I look for the exact models that belongs with this system. Where can I find this info? Numerous online searches have come up empty. I've come across a couple of auctions with subs that look like the one I need but I've found nothing verifying a model number. iPod docks have eluded me as well.

Depending on any other surprises I find along the way, I may need model numbers for the rest of the components.

Does it continue, or is it just residual power? If it's just for a few more seconds, it's just in the process of powering down.

If audio continues even after you turn off the system, you'll want to reach out to the Samsung customer service center at 800-SAMSUNG for further troubleshooting.
