The 9800 does not have a tuner built-in. You can only select the input (L1 or L2).
You would then need to manually set the channel on the device supplying the input to that Line in.
Most cable boxes can be programmed to coincide with your 9800 programming.

The Samsung DVD-9800 does NOT have a tuner or RF converter, therefore, no coax cable connector.

A- TRY CLEANING THE FRONT OF THE SYSTEM FIRST.
B- OPEN THE BATTERY COMPARTMENT, REMOVE BATTERIES AND WITH A EMERY BOARD (GIRLS NAIL FILE) LIGHTLY FILE THE TERMINALS
C- MAKE SURE THE BATTERIES FIT TIGHT, IF NOT CAREFULLY !!!!!!! EXTEND THE SPRING TERMINALS AT THE (+) CONNECTION WERE THE BATTERIES GO.

STOP THE DVD, THEN TAKE OUT THE DISC. PULL OUT THE POWER PLUG FROM THE OUTLET FOR A FEW MINUTES, & THEN PLUG IT BACK IN. PUSH THE DVD BUTTON, ON THE REMOTE CONTROL, FOR A MINUTE TO DRAIN THE MEMORY SETTINGS. TRY ANOTHER DVD, & IF DOING THESE 2 STEPS DOESN'T SOLVE THE PROBLEM, YOU MAY NEED SERVICE TO THE UNIT. MAKE SURE YOUR DVD DISC DOESN'T HAVE ANY SCRATCHES ON THE PLAYING SIDE.

IF MY KNOWLEDGE SERVES ME RIGHT YOU MUST HAVE 2 SETS OF AUDIO VIDEO CABLES (THE ONES WITH THE RED, WHITE, AND YELLOW CONNECTIONS) THERE HAS TO BE ONE SET RUNNING FROM THE LINE OUT HOOK UPS ON THE DVD/VCR PLAYER TO THE AUDIO/VIDEO IN ON THE TV. THEN THE OTHER SET FROM THE AUDIO/VIDEO OUT ON THE TV TO THE LINE 1 IN ON THE DVD/VCR. OR YOU CAN PURCHASE AN HDMI CABLE OR EVEN COMPONENT VIDEO CABLES.

Recently helped one on my friends get a new TV. Being a Samsung fan I influenced him to get a basic 32" Samsung flat screen and a very basic Samsung DVD/VCR combo to play his tapes and CDs. The combo has a HDMI slot. Being a low end unit it has no tuner. I thought I could hook up the HDMi cable and then by setting the TV to HDMI1 I could bring programs from the DVD and the VCR to the TV. It only brought the DVD programs I ended up having to hook up some RCA jacks from the combo to the TV to eventually bring over any VCR program. Why doesn't the HDMI work for both. The RCA jack could have brought over the DVD program, though the information transfer might not have been so good. What did I miss? Thx

The HDMI connector is made for digital signals such as DVD, while the VCR (composite) connector is of an analog type. Also, HDM connectorsI will display a resolution of up to 1080 lines and the composite connector will display up to 480 lines. VHS tapes have a resolution of 240 lines, andAlmost all DVD is 480p lines.

I have a Samsung DVD V9800 player. Before the country moved from Analog to Digital both the VCR and DVD sides worked.

Afterwards only the DVD side worked. Now suddenly the DVD doesn't work either. I insert a DVD and all that appears on the screen are horizontal grey bars of three different shades of grey. Any ideas of what's gone wrong? My TV is a 32" VISIO LCD, 120 Hz.

No. there is no DVD recordable capability in this device, nor can the reverse option of copying dvd onto video tape be done.
