When I opened the program with an "S" and a clock from the menu I was directed to upload the latest "Firmware" from you site. File uploaded was "CLP-310W_V1.xx.01.68.ZIP". When this was installed the printer restarted and then I had the problems.
It appears that this file overwrote whatever was in the printer.
Based on our research, we show no firmware updates for this printer, just drivers.
All current drivers are made available via the Manuals & Downloads section of the respective product support pages for Samsung devices. The current drivers will contain all past versions within them, so there should be nothing a preceeding version has that the current version does not.
I just wanted to pipe up to say that firmware updates for the CLP-315W/XAA seem to be one of the best kept secrets around (see the Staff post as an example!).
The latest update is available from the following ugly URL: http://support-us.samsung.com/cyber/popup/iframe/pop_troubleshooting_fr.jsp?idx=340440&modelname=CLP-315W&modelcode=CLP-315W%2FXAA&session_id=&from_osc=
It appears you have the latest firmware, from your follow-up answer. For reference, my version information is as follows:
Firmware Version >> Main Firmware Version : V1.01.01.68.W Sep-27-20 Network Firmware Version : V4.01.10(CLP-310W) 03-25-2010 Engine Firmware Version : 1.78.79 SPL Firmware Version : SPL-C 5.35 11-20-2007
(Yes, the screen truncates the year on the main firmware version. Sigh. But I was told it was supposed to say "2010".#
For what it's worth, I was directed to this firmware a year or so ago, when I called Samsung, as it fixed my WiFi connectivity issues on my printer. I would personally attempt to upgrade the firmware again, following the directions on that page precisely #and ensuring that you're using a quality USB cable as that updater doesn't seem to be the most robust thing around...#.
If you still determine that you have a problem, you should call Samsung's telephone support. They're actually pretty great. And if they don't know about firmware being available on the web, tell them to search the FAQs for "firmware". ;# When I had called, I recall the gentleman saying something like "Hm... It's strange. I haven't heard of an updated firmware for that printer. You'd think there would be at least one by now... Would you mind holding for a moment?"
Presumably, if an updated #or downgraded...# firmware isn't readily available #there were multiple versions loaded onto the printers, but it seems they can discern which was most likely for yours#, they have the resources to make an archive appear in your Inbox. ;#
But you should really try to figure out why the update has issues for you, starting with flashing it again. #You never stated the problems, so it's hard for anyone on the web to really give troubleshooting tips which are applicable...# Especially since the current firmware has various reliability fixes #including WiFi# and performance improvements #the printer's web page doesn't time out while it's churning out a 150 page job abymore, for starters!# versus whichever mine came with #2009ish#, it's really a good idea to be using it. :)
Simplest way is to plug it in to a wired network first. Then print the configuration page and go to the listed IP address in the web browser. Then configure the wireless settings and after saving the settings, remove the ethernet cable. This may sound more cumbersome, but it will work reliably, and needs no extra software.
How would I connect my CLP315W to my router. The router is a Netgear N300 WNR2000v3.

Sound like the printer driver did not properly install. Try uninstalling the printer and following the directions in the How to Guide on wireless setup. http://support-us.samsung.com/cyber/popup/iframe/pop_troubleshooting_fr.jsp?idx=150413&modelname=CLP-315W&modelcode=
Open the printers section , right click on the printer icon and select properties, then under the ports tab select the USB port or the Network port for WIFI, then it will print to the port selected. If you are using wireless connection then re-install using the correct install procedure.

There is no way to disable the WiFi, however under the Maintenance menu in SyncThru there is a Security setting where you can set an admin username and password.
If you plug in an Ethernet cable, the WiFi should be automatically disabled (the blue light will go out). The WiFi and wired network connections share a MAC address (that's the unique identifier for a network device; every single distinct network port in the world has its own), so there is no risk of both being active simultaneously; lots of badness would result and we'd all be unhappy campers with this printer! :D
As for security problems with open WiFi, the printer is a WiFi client and not an Access Point which means it does not set up a way for other WiFi clients to access it. It requires you to manually configure the WiFi settings so that it can connect to the appropriate network. If you enable the web page's security settings and plug in an ethernet cable, there is absolutely no risk of it finding some random WiFi Access Point that someone sets up and allowing random strangers to print to your printer.

We have a How-To section for setting the printer up on a wireless network: http://support-us.samsung.com/cyber/popup/iframe/pop_troubleshooting_fr.jsp?idx=150413&modelname=CLP-315W&modelcode=
Easiest way is to set up the printer on a wired network first. Print out the configuration page, then use the web interface to configure the wireless settings. much easier, and no need for the CD.

It's very crude, but you can do it from the printer's web page. You need to enter the address in your browser in the form of http://printer.ip.add.ress/ such as http://192.168.0.42/ to do so.
Once the page loads, click "Machine Settings" at the top then "Color" on the left. It will probably require a bit of trial-and-error, but it should get you the result you want.
Alternatively, if it's just that you're at a high altitude, you can go to "Machine Settings" and "Setup" to change "Altitude Adj." appropriately. Hopefully that will fix the color enough that you can then use the standard color profiles. :#
#Speaking of color profiles, if you are using Photoshop or some other advanced tool, be sure to specify the correct output color profile for the printer or it will probably try to send SRGB which looks terrible on most CMYK printers such as the CLP-315W/XAA.#

After a year of very light use, the printer just won't power up now. A brief click, but none of the normal startup mechanical sounds, no lights. Is there a service manual available? It is not worth paying for repairing as repairs in my city cost about the same as buying a new printer. If I have to buy a new one, it sure won't be a Samsung. This was an affordable printer, but has provided very little use to just die like this. If it is only meant to provide a few months of service and then die, then it is definitely not worth buying and I regret the purchase now. Is there anything I can do to repair this clunker on my own? Where is the service manual?

Thank you for contacting Samsung.
We're sorry to hear you're encountering this issue. Did you have the printer plugged into a surge protector to protect it from any lightning strikes, etc? We recommend you refer to the following troubleshooting article. If the printer definitely does not power on following these steps, we recommend you file a service request.
The option to proceed with service is yours if necessary, but if the product is still within it's 1-year manufacturer's warranty period, you have the option of registering the device to get an additional 3 months of warranty coverage at no cost to you.

As far as I know, the CLP-315W/XAA does not have a speaker. At least, mine has never made a noise which indicates it does! (The User Guide also makes no mention of any audio cues.)
I would suggest calling Samsung to see if they have any insight on this one!

As instructed by Samsung call center, turn off power and then unplug printer for 10 seconds. When I did that, the light continued to blink red. The arrow flashing red means the toner is low. The light indicators on the side tell you what colors need replaced. However, after doing what I was instructed, I was able to get it to print.

If you have the printer setup on the network you can change the default DPI in SyncThru (which you access by typing the unit's IP address into your browser) under the Graphics menu.
If it is not on the network, you can change the default DPI by right-clicking SmartPanel (the blue S in your task bar), selecting Printer Setting, and accessing the Graphics menu from there.
If you want to change the DPI from the Windows settings, go to your printer's Preferences and change the quality there.
My CLP-315W printer has Wi-Fi. Why do I need a USB to print to it?
I have gone through the setup procedures and think I have done so correctly, BUT I can't print unless the printer is connected via USB. The blue light is on but it does not indicate any activity.

I can't get the printer to stay in wireless mode. It will not work now after reinstalling the disk.
I have had to reinstall the disk several times. Now I can't get the printer to print in wireless mode. Does this happen because the power has gone out and then back on a few hours later ? Why will it not stay hooked up? Why do I have to keep reinstalling the CLP-315W into my laptop and desktop computers as the default wireless printer.

If you have your printer set up to get its IP address from a DHCP server, then each time the printer resets or the router resets it will be assigned a new address.
You can change this behavior, if your router supports it, you can assign your printers hardware address (often called MAC address) to a specific IP address. This is often done through a DHCP reservation list. If your router doesn't support DHCP reservation, then you will want to set the printer up with a static IP address.
Go to the web setup page for your printer and choose 'Network Settings' from the menu along the top. Then choose 'TCP/IP' from the menu on the left. For the selector window next to 'IP Address Assignment Method' choose STATIC. The last address the router assigned to your printer will still be displayed. Do not change any of the other settings except for the 'Machine IP Address' field. You want to move this address to a number outside the normally assigned range. This means changing the last number.
For example if the address used to be 192.168.0.5 you would change the 5 to 105. Remember do not change any of the first three digits, only the digits after the final dot. The last number can be anything from 1 to 256. But 1 is almost always the router and in rare instances 256 is the router so these two numbers should be avoided.
As a general rule if the last digit(s) are a single digit number then make the number three digits by adding 10 to the front of the number, similarly if the last digits are a three digit number increment the first digit up or down by one number. (103 becomes 203 or 212 becomes 112) Remember numbers higher than 256 are not valid.

That usually means that:
1) The gateway address doesn't match the specified IP address.
and/or
2) Your specified subnet mask is incorrect.
If your printer IP address is something like 192.168.0.7 but your gateway address is something like 203.0.113.128, #1 is the culprit. (Those are example addresses, but you should get the idea of "they don't match AT ALL!") In this case, make sure that the IP and gateway addresses "look similar". With many business networks, it's possible to have a few different gateway addresses for different parts of the path out to the internet; you just have to take the care to use the appropriate gateway for each address range as you generally cannot reach a gateway from another range (the gateway pretty much says "this is how you get there from here").
If your printer IP address is something like 10.0.7.12 and your gateway is something like 10.1.1.128, then #2 is likely the culprit.
It's possible that there's a combination of them at work here. Make sure you're entering the correct numbers in each place. :) If you continue having issues, contact your business's technical support or help desk staff. If you're a small business, contact your internet provider; they're generally quite used to the confusion that is inherent in business internet. :)
Good luck! You're bound to learn something on this journey (and may it be short)!

The max draw is the issue, and in general it is recommended not to put a laser printer on a UPS (the UPS provides power that is usually insufficient for the large momentary draw of the laser printer, so even high capacity UPSes may trip. It can be plugged into the Surge Only plug however, protecting it from power spikes.
