Question

Must I use the Samsung Wireless LAN Adapter to connect to my router?

Can I plug my third-party access point into the Ethernet port in the player to connect to my wireless router or must I use the Samsung Wireless LAN Adapter?

Also, once the player is connected to my home network, will I be able to play music that is stored on a media server that is also on my home network?

The WIS09ABGN Samsung LinkStick is the only compatible wireless LAN adapter for the Samsung Blu-ray players.

Music can be shared, however only certain formats are supported with the AllShare streaming feature. You may want to consult the owner's manual to see which formats are supported. MP3 is a supported format with many bit-rate options.

Thanks for your interest in Samsung products.

I have my BD-D5300 (Bluray Player) connected to my home network by Ethernet cable to the wireless router which has 4 ethernet ports on the back of it just in case I want to hook something up by wire. My device is able to access everything online that I have tried. I did a firmware update on my device, streamed tv shows through Hulu (gotta have Huluplus to do this), installed a few other apps and browsed through the on-demand movie selection.

Haven't tried connecting to and playing music or any other media from a media server yet however.

Yes, you can connect your player via Ethernet to your router. You do not need the wireless LAN adapter.

Yes, you should be able to access your computer's shared folders but must follow the setup instructions in the manual to do so. (see below)

"AllShare lets you play music, video, and photo
files located in your PC or your DLNA compatible
mobile phone or NAS on the player.
To use AllShare with your player, you must
connect the player to your network (See pages
22~23).
To use AllShare with your PC, you must install
AllShare software on your PC.
If you have a DLNA compatible mobile phone or
NAS, you can use AllShare without any additional
software.
You can download the PC software and get
detailed instructions for using AllShare from the
Samsung.com web site."

You may want to direct this question to the may fax your of your router. Unfortunately, we can't assist troubleshooting with people's home networks here. You may want to see if there is a firewall or other security measure that may be preventing your player from connecting to your router.

MaskMarvi is right. The only additional thing I did was also unplug the Ethernet cable from the unit, went to bed, and dealt with it in the morning using Setup. It automatically connected then. My guess is that leaving it disconnected from everything flushes any information previously cached by the player.

Question

Does this blu ra player model support the streaming of mkv files through all share?

I have some mkv files on my computer in my local network. I have the Samsung PC Share manager set correctly, but the mkv files freeze when played through my blu ray. I also have a samsung TV (UN46D6000SF series) set up in a similar way and they play flawlessly on the TV allshare.

Question

Even though I have inserted a 4GB USB Flash Drive, it is not recognized as Local Storage, only as a drive with some folders.

Have tried 2 USB Flash drives, 16GB Cruzer and 4GB Lexar. Neither recognized as Local Storage. What is the secret to making a USB Flash drive act as Local Storage for Blu-Ray disc content?

I checked the user manual and I wonder whether the answer is to ignore the fact that the flash drive comes up as a drive with folders, go ahead and load a blu-ray disc, and when the blu-ray menu has loaded it will at that point use the USB device as Local Storage (probably making its own special folder on the device). Page 58 of the PDF user manual says:

Once the player is connected to the network, you can enjoy various movie-related service contents
using a BD-LIVE compliant disc.

1. Attach a USB memory stick to the USB jack on the side of the player, and then check
its remaining memory. The memory device must have at least 1GB of free space to accommodate the BD-LIVE services.
2. Insert a Blu-ray Disc that supports BD-LIVE.
3. Select an item from various BD-LIVE service contents provided by the disc manufacturer.

NOTE: The way you use BD-LIVE and the provided contents may differ, depending on the disc manufacturer.

Backup plan: You may also need to toy with formatting the flash drive on your PC as FAT16 instead of FAT32.

Go to "BD Data Management" under settings (I think) to "select" the inserted Flash Drive. Otherwise when you try to use BD-Live it won't recognize the Flash Drive.

Hope this helps.

Page 40 of the manual shows a symbol on how to open and close the disc tray. What the manual does not inform the reader is the switch to open/close the tray is on the unit located on the right hand side. The remote control does not have provisions for opening the tray. This is logical since we have to go over to the unit anyway to insert the disc.

I confirm this person's comments regarding the remote control and its lack of control over opening and closing the disc tray. It may seem trivial to many but not for others. My wife is partially blind and it is difficult for her to see the tray control button on the player. It's really a matter usability and interface for typical users and not typical designers.

There's another model that comes with "built-in" WiFi" but costs more. The BD-D5300 has the "option" to add WiFi and is less expensive. I guess you have to read the small print on the box before making a purchase.

Question

When trying to access Netflix for the first time, I get an error that says I'm not connected.

I have confirmed that I am connected by Ethernet cable. I have an existing NetFlix account, and assumed i would just add another device to my account. Does this require authentication in the App Store? The Security Certificate on the credit card form page is not completely validated - you expect me to enter my credit card data?! Sorry, that is unacceptable!

I'm sorry to hear that you're having a problem connecting with Netflix.

You should be able to add another device to your Netflix account just by launching the Netflix app. It will prompt you to enter in a code on the www.Netflix.com/activate website. I believe you can have up to six devices for each Netflix account, but that would be something that Netflix would be able to confirm.

I don't see any problems with the security certificate on the App Store, but I'll be happy to send that up so that we can look further into why this might have happened.
